2 Crystal Questions (please, please, please...)

You are absolutely correct, I was making the assumption that the reports
that will be run will be the non-standard Vantage reports, because he wants
to add parameter fields.

I have not installed the ODBC client on any of the dozen PCs running
distributed reports... BUT these are modifications of the standard Vantage
Crystal reports that run from .dbf files (and are limited to the data
found
in them). Most are special purpose mods of the Job Traveler and require
that
the user select jobs via the traveler selection screen to get the .dbf
files
created in their VTNGWORK folder. So it depends a lot on what you are
doing
whether you need the ODBC client. If I try to modify my version of the
job
traveler to select from a parameter and use the "full" tables directly
then
I am sure, as you stated, I will have to install the ODBC client on each
PC
running the report.

Troy answered #1 perfectly. I will add one item to his answer for #2. In
addition to running the distribution setup.exe you also need to install an
ODBC client on each machine that you need to run reports from.

I have two questions:

1) How the heck do I create some kind of dialog box or question
prompt(s) at the beginning of a report (compiled preferably) to allow
the user to enter beginning and ending date range data (or other similar
info)? I can't even get a clue how to do this.

2) After I compile the report (I'm on V 3.0 - CR 6.0) do I just add an
icon to the user's screen (must CR be installed on their machine?) or
what?

Okay so that's technically 3 questions, but I still need help (mental or
otherwise)...

Thanks a million, billion, trillion!!

I don't know anything about Crystal 6. In version 7 and 8 the keyword is Parameter. A powerful feature in Crystal. Once you create a parameter using the walk-through dialog boxes (pick the type of paramenter: date, number, string, boolean, etc.), then Crystal shows that parameter with your list of fields with the "?" question mark in front of the name you gave the parameter. Then just use the parameter in a formula or selection. This works in compiled reports as well.

2) After I compile the report (I'm on V 3.0 - CR 6.0) do I just add an
icon to the user's screen (must CR be installed on their machine?) or
what?

(Again in Crystal 7 and 8) If you follow the instructions for Report Distribution, you won't need to install the full CR on their machine. You will, however, need to run the new file that is created by Crystal called "setup.exe" for that specific report. We give a directory on the network for each report, where all the files, dll's, exe's and rpt's are stored. Then each user has an icon to that directory on the network. You really should call Seagate, or read the documentation closely, because there are a lot of options to choose from in the process of compiling, and we found that different operating systems caused different problems. Good luck.

I would love to see an answer to your first question. It would solve a lot
of problems for me and eliminate that custom programming question I had.

As for #2 although we are using CR8 on Vantage 4.0 perhaps I can point in a
useful direction. There is a report distribution facility (which in CR8 you
have to download from Seagate - free) which creates a set of .dll's and
files for exporting the report in a run-time fashion. Running the setup.exe
that gets created will install on client PC. No Crystal required on client.
According to Seagate the distribution facility is going away (darned!) in
favor of web distribution (double darned! - too much hassle to setup web
server). I have setup icon in favorites to run the distributed CR on the
client PCs like any other external program (Excel, Word, etc...). Sorry I
can't be more specific about CR6 and V3.0.

As some of the others have suggested, the feature that you are needing are called parameters. It's been so long since I've used v6 that I can't remember where to lead you. Just search the help file for how to use this feature.

In version 6 you can create compiled reports. You must have the ODBC drivers installed on the client in order to run the compiled reports. Crystal will create a distributable setup.exe that you run on each client that needs access to the report.

Hope this helps,

Answer to question #1:

I'm using CR 6.0 and use the parameter option all the time. I find it under
insert and parameter fields. I create the field(s) and use them in the
report selection process to gather only the needed data. I have a high as 6
in one report.

Question #2:

When I talked to Seagate about compiled reports, they told me I only have to
do the distribution once. After that I just compile the report and add it
to the users machine. They also suggested that it is better to put the
report files in a folder (directory) on the users hard drive rather than a
network drive. If installed on the network the running can be
unpredictable.
