Wow, NT 4.0 is so late 90's. Ah takes me back... And I thought my company was bad about upgrading!
It is technically possible to join Windows Server 2008 to a Windows NT 4.0 domain, but this is completely unsupported by Microsoft. Plus, why would you want to? How do you live without Active Directory?!?! Do you host email internally? Do these NT 4.0 machines have internet access (hope not)? There are a ton of security flaws identified in Windows 2000 that also affect NT 4.0, but Microsoft didn't offer patches for NT 4.0. Personally, I would have less of a problem making the 2008 box a domain controller and running Epicor9.
But if you insist, first create the computer account on the NT 4.0 PDC. From the Server 2008 command line use:
netdom.exe join NETBIOS_SERVER_NAME /domain:DOMAIN_NAME /userD:administrator /passwordD:*
Plug in the appropriate values for NETBIOS_SERVER_NAME and DOMAIN NAME. leave the * for password and you will be prompted to enter the domain administrator password. Cross your fingers, pray, sacrifice a goat, and hopefully it works for you. I think you have to be on SP6a.
There is no official product called Windows Server 2008 R1; it's simply called Windows Server 2008. The second release is called Windows Server 2008 R2. Epicor offially certifies Windows Server 2008, but 9.05 runs fine on Windows Server 2008 R2 for us.
Cheers,
Jared
