2D Labels

Todd,

Check out the CR2 from code corporation:

http://www.codecorp.com

Their little reader waaayyyy outperforms the competition (symbol, intermec,
HHP, etc...) and has some very cool wireless options. The really cool part,
however, is their CodeXML BE router software that converts the data stream
into keystroke input at the host so integration with DC/IT screens is a
snap. For a nauseatingly thorough look at barcode fonts and their
implementation check out:

http://www.idautomation.com/fonts/pdf417/

Basically, the 2D Barcodes consist of two components: an encoder .dll to
create an intermediary data stream and a font to render the bar code. If
you are implementing in Crystal, installing the UFL (User Function Library)
creates a pair of functions that you can embed in a formula to encode the
data and render the barcode.

The benefits of 2D codes are enormous. First the data density far exceeds
1D codes like 3 of 9. For example you can encode the entire contents of a
standard shipping label (name, address, items, serial numbers, etc...) in an
area not much larger than a postage stamp. Second, 2D symbologies have
error correction built into the encoding/decoding algorithms so that even if
50% to 60% of the code is obscured of damaged, it can still be accurately
read. Third, they can be etched directly onto the finished goods and still
read effectively. Finally, since your scanner has to be an image scanner to
read the font, you can reuse the scanner to do things like take images of
defects for quality tracking, etc...

Good luck,

Michael

Very interesting. We too just got some military work and the parts need to
be 2D serial number barcoded and components tracked under a master serial
number. Fortunately the customer is providing the labels so printing is not
an issue. Curiously they are using PDF417 as the format. Our only issue is
a scanner to record the component sets. We are probably going with an
Imageteam 4800 Industrial 2D Imager that used a CCD "camera" to view the
entire 2D barcode and resolve the data out of it. But down the road I can
see us having to print our own labels so that side is of great interest to
us too.

Paul,

As I'm sure you are finding out, the mil-spec 2D requirement is actually a
mixed spec requiring different symbologies for unit and intermediate
containers from the outer container. There are several software
applications that can meet the specification including:

http://www.barcoding.com/MIL-STD-129P.shtml

Of the available 2D symbologies the mil-spec is probably the weakest in that
it does not include error checking and cannot be direct etched on the
finished goods. As a result, there are more scanning errors with mil-spec
than say Data Matrix or PDF417. We're not aware of anyone who has directly
integrated mil-spec barcoding with Vantage but most of the available
labeling software claims to easily integrate with ERP applications.

We have to provide/create some 2D labels per spec MIL-STD-129P on a gov't
contract that we recently received.

I would appreciate any software suggestions and how you are getting the info
from Vantage to the label?

Also, is anyone doing RFD tags/labels, I suppose I should get ready in case
I need to provide those in the future.

Thanks!
