5.0 installation instructions

Keith - I just did the deed this past weekend. I got the install
instructions
from Epicor's web site. You will need to get the latest patch if you don't
have it. Look for 'eManufacturing Installation Guide using Progress
Database 142.6kb 12/6/00.'
I believe the same document is on the CD. You will definitely need to have
IE 5.0
at least on each client. I had two data conversions ( 2.5 hrs each ) and
schema changes ( 3 hours ). 650mb Database.

Matt,

I don't know about your area, but they just installed DirecPC Two Way at
my
house Friday and it just screams!

The problem might be because of the demand. I know they are upgrading
current customers first and we were about the 5th customer in the
Indianapolis and central Indiana area to get it. According to my
installer,
they are just getting swamped with requests.

DirecPC one way you can install yourself, but two way needs a certified
installer because you are beaming microwaves into space and our military
does not like it when we screw up their satellites.

I would call DirecPC and see what they have to say.

If you need anything else, please let me know.

I was told by our local Direct-PC supplier that the two-way

Are you saying that you have this service without a modem?

Troy,

You might look into Direcpc Two Way (no phone line needed) and VPN. The
hardware for the two way runs about $500 - $600 installed. I don't know
what the monthly cost is for business use, but home runs me $59 for
unlimited usage. Speed is about 512kb up and 256kb down. This should be
fast enough for data collection and one user.

You can check it out at WWW.DIRECPC.COM < http://www.DIRECPC.COM

Is anyone using, or is anyone aware of Wireless hardware that could
connect
a LAN with a distance of 3.5 miles? We have a small manufacturing area
around 3.5 miles (as the crow flies) from our main plant, and would like
to
connect about 5 or 6 PC's to our network for data collection and minimal
Vantage use.

Lydia,
Im using Wingate at the moment to distribute( I have a 6 user Wingate
Pro), granted the connection is slower to the clients than at the machine
where the Tranceiver is but the PERCEIVED DIFFERENCE is that the Net is
frisky and quick "Much faster than at home". The installer I had at home
was one of the system's developer's and said that upgrades for Wingate and
WinProxy are due to permit this speed difference to be overcome.

Can anyone tell me what the shortcomings of the Financial Report Designer

Subject: RE: {Off topic} Office 97 Licenses

There is tons of illegal MS software out there being sold as "Legit". Even
if it's shrink-wrapped in an "Original" looking box it may be bootleg.

Here's the deal ... If you buy software that the seller tells you is legit
and it isn't then you have thrown your money away. MS will not accept that
it's somebody else's fault. It's your responsibility.

You can call MS and give them the name of the retailer that is offering the
'Deal' and they will verify it for you. I called them several years ago
after getting a call from a company offering Office-Pro CD's with license
papers for $ 125.00 each. MS thanked me for calling them and the company
was out of business by the end of the day.

There have been several cases of larger companies who purchased 2-300 copies
of Office only to find out they were ALL bootleg.

It hurts bad enough to purchase this stuff once ... why would you want to
buy it twice ?

Also, I received a call from my "Friendly" neighborhood MS licensing
specialist on Friday to tell me that after June 31'st this year you will NO
LONGER be able to buy "Upgrades" from MS. Only new licenses will be
available for purchasing. They are moving towards a program where you would
buy a new license and then if you choose you would also purchase a 2 year
support program which would entitle you to all upgrades for 2 years. Think
of $ 390 for Office-Pro PLUS $ 290 for a 2 year maintenance program ---- OR
---- you can just buy a full license, wait 2 years, and then buy ANOTHER new
license.

It's a beautiful thing !!!

I'd be interested in finding the same (MSO '97 licenses or
packages.) We're stuck due to incompatibility with MSO-2k and some other
software here.

Few years ago there were some companies that sold / liquidated retail stock
of "obsolete" software, still in the shrink wrap, at extremely low
prices. I haven't been able to track them down again, but haven't searched
that hard, either.

Shirley,
How does your company handle e-mail with DirectPC? I see you have a reserved domain name. Is this through DirectPC or another provider? We are currently using a 56K connection for 30 some users. We have around 60 unique email addresses under our 'libertyelectronics.com' domain name and can go to 100 without a price increase. All this is handled by our local ISP.
We'd like to increase our spead for internet, while still keeping our domain name. Will we have to keep paying the ISP and also and DirectPC as a separate entity?

How do you handle the email part with DirectPC?

Lydia,
Im using Wingate at the moment to distribute( I have a 6 user Wingate
Pro), granted the connection is slower to the clients than at the machine
where the Tranceiver is but the PERCEIVED DIFFERENCE is that the Net is
frisky and quick "Much faster than at home". The installer I had at home
was one of the system's developer's and said that upgrades for Wingate and
WinProxy are due to permit this speed difference to be overcome.

I'm doing some research on this myself, and they told me yes, but the
software is more expensive (of course).

Does anyone know if DirectPC 2-way can be used on a LAN so that many users
can have access?

Dave: I hate to branch off in this direction but..
I was told by our local Direct-PC supplier that the two-way
service is 'temporarily' off the market. Some sort of problem
with government satellites ( not GWB's fault ).

This should
be
fast enough for data collection and one user.

Subject: Financial Report Designer File Available

Earlier today, Nora Story said that she had a document that detailed
how to build a P/L Statement with the Financial Report Designer.
Nora was kind enough to fax a copy to me, which I translated to PDF
format (Adobe Acrobat; free reader) and posted in the Misc section of
the Files area on Yahoo!s Vantage page. Unfortunately, it lost a
fair amount of clarity in the process but it is still readable. The
document was created for version 3.0 but still applies to v4.0 (and
possibly v5.0).

Thanks again, Nora, for sharing this with the group!

Also, if anyone has documents that they would like to share with the
group, I am always more than willing to do the fax-to-PDF translation.

I was told by our Microsoft rep that downgrade rites are available ONLY if
you have a volume license, not with shrink-rapped packages. You can get an
open licenses bu purchasing as few as 5 copies. They are cheaper then
shrink-rapped packages as well.

I need to buy some additional Office 97 licenses. Does anybody have any that
they want to sell, or know of a place where I could buy some?
