5.2 to 6.1 Upgrade

I'll put money on it that your C: and D: are partitions on the same drive
array.

I belive i undestand your question

We do online backup of vantage on different physical drive.

Below is the .bat file commands

cd \epic61\prog91d\bin
mfgbkup online d:\epic61\db\mfgsys c:\backup\backup.1

I am in the process of making some test runs on an 5.2 to 6.1 upgrade. Does the Vantage database itself make any reference to drive letters?

When I do the update, I'll take our database and move it over to a test server that has vantage on it. Then I'll update that server to 6.2. I'll take our actual Vantage server, wipe it and reinstall the OS on it. I'll then install version 6.2 only and transfer our database back to the server.

The issue I have is that the updates don't require you to install progress again. The progress installed with 5.2 will be on another drive letter. If I update using this method but transfer the database to a new server where Progress and Vantage are on the same drive letter, will that make a difference or does that not matter?

Thanks,
Jasper

Should not matter at all. The DB is "location agnostic" and it is the .ini files and such point Progress to where it is. One of the better ways to move it around is to backup from the test server and restore to the produciton server. The DB is just a set of files that exist somewhere for Progress to use. Backing up and restoring in the new location assures that all the right files are "created" at the new location. Progress and Vantage can still be in the same location (mapped drive etc...) just like for 5.2 but things might get confusing due to documentation and such refering to "mfgsys6x" a lot rather than "vantage". There was (is?) a move away from the Vantage name when they started consolidating Vista and Vantage. The main risk for one location might be confusion within the .ini type files that contain references to things. Also be sure to closely check everything in the backup routines to make sure they are all pointing to the right places.

I don't believe you will have a problem. I don't think a fresh install
which is what you are doing requires separate mapped drives. In fact when I
went to 6.0 I believe the documentation on installing gave you the choice.
I don't know about 5.2 because I went from 4.0 to 6.0 in one weekend.
Make sure you have lots of drive space on your server. My database is
growing at 100MB per month under 6.0. In thirteen months it has grown from
2.4 GB to 4.7 GB. Remember that 100MB per month really translates to 200MB
because you have to back up to the same drive.

Has anyone figured a way to run the Vantage backup to a different
physical drive or to a mapped drive ??
