[6.1] Birds of a feather: FIELD SERVICE

We use the Field Service module pretty intensively, and are reasonably
disappointed with it. It works, but only just! Several issues we find
unacceptable are as follows.
1. No link to customer price lists. Any part we sell through the service
call, we want the selling price to show on the invoice. For this to
happen, we need to use the Sales Unit Price in the Part, even though all
our parts are already on customer Price lists. This of course means we
essentially have a field which needs constant monitoring and updating,
and I shudder to think how we will ever be able to incorporate a price
rise. Also, we are unable to incorporate flexible discounts, because the
Sales Unit price cannot be varied between different customers.
2. Labour entries to a service job directly affect the selling price, so
the job must be manually adjusted for every service call, to ensure the
quoted price is what is actually invoiced.
3. We can not find any link between a service call and an invoice, so
there is no traceability in this area.
4. We can never find a relevant service call. To get to a current
service call, you must first select the correct customer, and the
correct delivery address, if a customer has multiple factories. It would
be great to have a list of current service calls somewhere, which we
could view easily.

I think the service call feature is the weakest point in our use of
Vantage, and agree with the general feeling that there can't be many
customers using it, because these, and other issues should have been
rectified. It essentially appears to be a hastily tacked on extra, and
the integration suffers because of this.

I never received any replies to the posting back in September, so I am
asking again just to see if anyone is interested in sharing their
experiences. I realize that Field Service is not widely implemented within
the Vantage user base, but considering that our group membership is now just
shy of 1300 (120 more members in less than 6 months), I figured that just 5%
usage would mean 65 potential responders. On the other hand, maybe the
usage is only 1% and I've already had contact with everyone on the list who
uses FS. Anyway, still worth a shot...

Challenge #2...

Anyone out there that has found that the Field Service, as designed, works
well for their company from start to finish, i.e. from selling the service
contract as a line on a sales order, through the processing of service
contract lines, service calls and service jobs, to the
shipping/completing/closing/invoicing of said calls/jobs and recognizing of
revenues and costs in G/L? If so, please reply on-list or off-list.

Regards,
Scott

Ok, Todd, I'll bite! I'll accept your challenge and we'll see what
happens...

Anyone else out there who struggles (or better yet, doesn't struggle) with
the referenced issues? If so, please reply, either on-list or off-list.

Subject: [Vantage] 1,176 people on the list - ask away - it's FREE and you
don't have to buy a plane ticket !

Just checked - 1,176 people on this list from all over the world.
Folks - ask away - no question too large or too small. It's ALL free and you
don't have to buy plane tickets! How can this possibly be a better
deal?????????

If someone wants to start a "Birds of a feather" exchange on the list - go
for it -

Try subject lines like:

"Birds of a feather: Plastic Molding"
"Birds of a feather: Accountants" - lay out topics of conversation and see
what you can get going -
"Shop Floor Scheduling Module: The good, the bad, and the ugly - open
conversation"

Send a msg looking for 5 or 10 people on the list that are interested in one
particular conversation and offer to set up a conference call where you can
talk privately. Of course, the rest of us would appreciate it if you would
post the results of those group conversation on the list!

Seems like we have a ton of people who don't feel comfortable asking
questions on the list ... especially people who are non-technical. But if
you want to start a thread about a specific module or topic you may be able
to get them to join in on a conversation. Like a lot of things in life - 1
person has to be willing to start the thread ...

You are allowed to have brutally honest discussions about Vantage modules -
what works, what doesn't, what you would like to see changed - just try not
to make it personal and try not to bash EPICOR as a company. Individual
modules on the other hand are fair game - have at it. Constructively if at
all possible -

Most people seem to think of the list as an "Ask a question / Get an answer"
format. That's the least of what it could be. Why can't you set up groups
of people to just discuss issues?

Years ago I suggested that EPICOR use the list to evaluate suggested changes
to modules. Subject line: "EPICOR's proposed changes to XXX module - What
do you think of these ideas?" Sure would be nice to have 1,179 people
review this stuff BEFORE it gets written. You would think that EPICOR would
---jump--- at the chance of having a FREE way to tap into all of us for
ideas. Some companies actually PAY to have focus groups. How about a focus
group with 1,179 members who would LOVE the chance to be involved in the
future of this product!

This list is a possibility for 1,179 people to talk to each other who will
likely never meet in person. Personal opinion - we aren't even using 1% of
the potential for a tool like this.

If you want to see waves in a pond, sometimes you have to be willing to
throw a rock!

Bottom line - stir up the list and see what happens. This list is NOT just
for tech's! Heck, we even allow woman to join - ( I'll duck now .... )

Hi Scott,

We have been using the Field Service Module for a few months and found it
has a number of bugs which are fairly obvious to see. I assume this means
that there are few users out there otherwise these bugs would have been
picked up and fixed long ago.

It is not a perfect fit for our business but we can and do make it work.
Issues include:

1.It is designed to be "Do and Charge" therefore there is no direct links to
the quoting module. This means setting up a quote to provide the Customer
with an estimate of the cost and then repeating all the setup in the Service
Call. Alternatively you can use the Service Call to get the estimate up
front but then you do not get a quote printout for your customer and have to
remember to delete those Calls not proceeding
2. Service contracts are required to be invoiced up front. In our market
this is simply unrealistic. Customers are happy to sign up to a contract but
do not expect to pay until something is actually done.
3. Cannot Mass Issue materials to Service jobs, fortunately we are able to
Backflush them but the Backflushing is very buggy and requires tight
procedures to work around the bugs.
4. We have a Service Division which does not hold its own inventory but uses
shared warehouse. All out materials are Standard priced. When we backflush
materials the materials cost is correctly reported as the Standard Price
(STD). It we issue the materials singlely (mass issues doesn't work) the
material cost is the SELLING PRICE (SP). I am told that Vantage first looks
to use the Internal Price (IP) and that is fair enough, if no IP then it
uses the SP, this is where Epicor's logic is ridiculous. Surely if there is
no IP then the cost should be the inventory valuation i.e. the STD. Under no
circumstances should it be the Selling Price.

Sorry for the delay in responding, we were too new to Service module when
you first posted and I have recently been away an unable to respond to your
follow up request.

John
