[6.1] Customer Ship To - Retail Drop Ship Means Thousands of Th

Todd,

You're on the right track. I know of at least one other Vantage customer I had worked with many moons ago who had the same situation you're describing. A product with one billing address and a gazillion retail shipping points. They created a Ship to for each location. The leading zeros helped in this situation as well.

Unless there is some new functionality on 8 I think you've already figured out the best way to handle.

HTH,
Mike

Subject: [Vantage] [6.1] Customer Ship To - Retail Drop Ship Means Thousands of Them

For a metal stamping job shop we have gotten ourselves into an odd situation where a new subsidiary sells a consumer product. Mostly through distributors who have us send the product (electric mirror defoggers for bathrooms and fogfree mirrors for showers) direct to the customer. We have one distributor who now has about 2,000 ship to addresses and another which will have many times that if the relationship takes off. This one deals with showrooms that builders send people to to spend their accessories allowances on their new house. Could be many thousands of new houses the products go into (we certainly hope anyway). So I am looking to see how other people doing retail sales handle this where we bill the distributor but ship to the end consumer (or their builder anyway).

Do you create a new shipto for each receiving location? Or is there another way to ship and forget? I might try making a dummy shipto and having them change it for each order but we might have a dozen in process at a given time and I also would not want to lose the trail of where it went. When we invoice the distributor they like to see the receiving address and sometimes their customer number for the end customer.

One big issue for our people is numbering each shipto record. Unless I missed it it looks like there is no autonumbering (next) capability. Best advice for them so far has been to number with lots of leading zeros because it is an alphanum field and does not do a numeric sort. This way they can at least search for the last number and add one themselves.

Any tips and tricks would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
