[6.1] Vantage Help on IE7 and/or XP SP2...Page Not Found

Thanks but that was the first thing I tried. I have tried every value from 1 to 4. I did however note that my key for ItssRestrictions (which was there already when I received the new PC) was not "under" the 1.x key so I added another there. Still no effect.

Here is some summarized info, but I did not want to fill up the screen with
the detail from pages whose links are included below
Hope it helps

Here is the microsoft artice detail:

http://support. <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896358> microsoft.com/kb/896358

Here is another solution listed by the link:
http://www.helpscri <http://www.helpscribble.com/chmnetwork.html> bble.com/chmnetwork.html

If you trust all the computers on your LAN or intranet (and the people using
them), you can lower the restrictions on the Local Intranet zone to allow
CHM files to be displayed with the following steps:

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\HTMLHelp\1.x\ItssRestrictions
If this registry subkey does not exist, create it.
3. Right-click the ItssRestrictions subkey, point to New, and then click
DWORD Value.
4. Type MaxAllowedZone, and then press Enter.
5. Right-click the MaxAllowedZone value, and then click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Quit Registry Editor.

This is another microsoft document that talks about other solutions.

The last time help wouldn't display the Internet explore patches
caused the problem, my guess is IE7 also has those changes built in.

Old note on problem.
Vantage can supply this

Microsoft patches caused the problem.

Or look in the files section here at this file.

I didn't use above file, so can't comment on it.

I hope this helps.

Thanks but the Vantage_Help.reg routine just sets the ItssRestrictions registry entry and I have already done that. Actually it was already set to 4 when I looked at it so perhaps XP sp2 does this by default now (which is strange because 4 is a pretty wide open setting). I think there may be an issue with the compiled HTML Help (.CHM) file because I can not open it directly referencing the file location either...even after adding my mapped vantage file location to trusted sites and all that sort of thing in IE. FireFox won't even attempt to open a .CHM file, instead offering to save it to disk. Even from File Explorer if I double click on vnhelp_enu.chm it DOES open the help style browser with the Epicor icons at the top BUT in the results side it says "Navigation to the webpage was canceled"..then clicking on any topic it says "The program cannot display the webpage".

I'm opening a call via web portal since it is not super urgent. I can still open the .hlp file version manually when I need to look something up.

Thanks again though,
-Todd C.

I have a similar situation with my Citrix users. To get around it, I
have a shortcut to the vnhelp_enu.chm file which is located in the
MFGSYS61\HELP\ directory. The downside here is it is not context
specific meaning it does not open directly to the help section related
to the screen you happen to be in. It works outside of Vantage.

Your situation is definitely different than my Citrix situation which
just crashes us out, but the solution should still work.

It does the same thing no matter how I access the .CHM file. Within Vantage, double-clicking on the .CHM file from Explorer or pasting the file path into the address bar of IE7.

I have found indications there was a bug at Beta 2 of IE7 realted to:
"Bookmark links in *.CHM files return a "Page not found" error."
This was suppsoed to have been fixed in IE7 version 7.0.5335.5 but I am running 7.0.5730.11. It would not surprise me greatly if MS has patch fixes that become un-fixed due to later patch releases...just like another familar software vendor. I will hunt some more for an MS KB document if it exists. But right now I am thinking this is a MS-IE7 issue and not Epicor's.

Is anyone else using IE7 with Vantage 6.1 and able to access context related help or manually open the Vanhelp_enu.chm file in IE7? Again, my major symptom is the right panel "help content" part of the screen can not be accessed...the .CHM does run its mini-browser window with the help topics on the left. So I strongly think this is related to .CHM bookmarks as the issue above indicates.

More info:
Help works fine on any PC here running IE6...whether XP or Win2K. Only IE7 seems affected.

I found the following MS-KB article that seems to indicate a programming technique when using CHM files may be at the root of the issue...
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824847
I am not familiar enough with the programming to know if this applies to Epicor's use of the .CHM file but it appears to me know that a change by MS has broken something that formerly worked.
-Todd C.

PS....if, perchance, someone at Epicor is monitoring this thread could you please forward this to support and reference the following call:
"#1002905PSC - Help Declares Page Not Found or Unable to Display Page"
It may be useful to them. I don't know how to add info to an existing web originated call.
Thanks.

I'm running Vantage 6.1.541 with IE 7.0.5730.11 and Windows XP Pro
SP2. My Vantage Help works fine.
I just ran across this article that may be of "help":

Dr. Vantage August/September 2006

Dear Dr. Vantage - I try to bring up online help, and the topic says
"The page cannot be found." Does this mean the topic does not exist?
Or if it does, then where is it looking for help?

Dr. Vantage Replies: To the first question, no it does not mean the
topic doesn't exist. However, for whatever reason, the help browser
that launches is not able to locate the topic. To the second question,
the answer is, it looks wherever the client was told that the help is
located on the server. Luckily, you have a quick and easy way of
finding out exactly where that is!

The config file located in your client directory has a setting called
TraceHelp. The default value is 0 or blank, which means that help
won't be traced in a log. This switch needs to be set to 3. (Options 1
and 2 are not used at present.)

For example, this error appears on the BOM Listing Report in the
Engineering \ General Operations folder. To determine where it is
trying to find help:

1. Close Vantage.

2. Locate the MfgSys.exe.config file (for example, C:\Client).

3. With Notepad or Wordpad, edit the .config file to set the
value as the
following: <add name="TraceHelp" value="3" />. Save and
close the file.

4. Start Vantage again, and navigate to the BOM Listing Report
window that yielded
the "Page Cannot Be Found" error.

5. Press F1. A log file, in the \log subdirectory (for
example, C:\client\log), tells
where help is expected. In this case, it tells where it
should be reinstated.

The log directory holds a text file transcript of all online help
activity that occurred since TraceHelp was set to 3. For each instance
of invoking help, the log has an entry similar to the following (where
<server> is the server name):

\">\\<server>\Help\HelpLinks\help_Epicor.Mfg.UI.Rpt.BOMListingReport.BOMListingReportForm.xml

8/21/2006 11:26 AM: Help Link Info:

AssemblyName: Epicor.Mfg.UI.Rpt.BOMListingReport
FormFullName:
Epicor.Mfg.UI.Rpt.BOMListingReport.BOMListingReportForm
SheetGuid: a315b3ef-3ceb-4901-9911-72b75a9c1636
BaseUIHelp: RptBoMList.htm
BaseSubDirectory: Engineering
SheetHelp: RptBoMList.htm
SheetSubDirectory: Engineering

Review and compare with the files on the <server> server. In this
case, if RptBoMList.htm is not in the Engineering directory, then this
error appears. It is possible that the help file was put elsewhere or
was not deployed to the server properly.

Jerry,

The hosts file is for DNS resolution, so you would place an entry in there if your vantage server is accessible through an internet DNS name, (i.e. yourserver.com
equated to ip address).
If you have an internal server on your LAN, you should place an entry in your LMHOSTS file such as 192.168.x.x yourservername.

Try that and see if it corrects your problem. Since you're getting a DNS error, I think that will fix the problem.

window that yielded
the "Page Cannot Be Found" error.

5. Press F1. A log file, in the \log subdirectory (for
example, C:\client\log), tells
where help is expected. In this case, it tells where it
should be reinstated.

The log directory holds a text file transcript of all online help
activity that occurred since TraceHelp was set to 3. For each instance
of invoking help, the log has an entry similar to the following (where
<server> is the server name):

\">\\<server>\Help\HelpLinks\help_Epicor.Mfg.UI.Rpt.BOMListingReport.BOMListingReportForm.xml

8/21/2006 11:26 AM: Help Link Info:

BaseUIHelp: RptBoMList.htm
BaseSubDirectory: Engineering
SheetHelp: RptBoMList.htm
SheetSubDirectory: Engineering

Review and compare with the files on the <server> server. In this
case, if RptBoMList.htm is not in the Engineering directory, then this
error appears. It is possible that the help file was put elsewhere or
was not deployed to the server properly.

Thanks for the confirmaiton IE7 can work for 6.1 help.

The article though looks suspiciously like 8.0 related info and I don't have anything remotely related to a "Client" folder on my PC or on the server. In my Mfgsys61 folder tree on the server there is also no such thing as a .config file.

I will however look at patch 541's documentation for fixes related to help. We are on 536 I believe.

Thanks but LMHOSTS did not help. It is not a DNS error specifically as much as just one of the suggestions in the "Page not found" error message (like a 404 message):
---------------------------------
This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:

* Internet connectivity has been lost.

* The website is temporarily unavailable.

* The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.

* The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's domain.

---------------------------------

It is finding the .chm file just fine but once it runs it can't find the help content within it...as if the bookmarks are messed up...ditto for context related help that should go directly to specific help centent related to the screen the help button is on. I think the DNS references in the not found message are generic and do not apply.

While looking for (and not finding) any reference to help related patches since 6.10.536 I came across a file download for InSiteShip.chm - another compressed/compiled help file and downlaoded it to my desktop. When I open it I get exactly the same results as for vnhelp_enu.chm (or so I thought, read on).

BUT....maybe a huge clue!!!!
When I copied the vnhelp_enu.chm file to my desktop and tried to open it from there IT WORKS!!! When I open it from M:\mfgsys61\help it does NOT. So maybe there really is a network issue. ALSO...the InSiteShip.chm that I had downloaded was coming up with a security warning before failing to open...when I check marked the "Don't ask me again"...it started working from the desktop (and does not ask that question again). When I copied from the desktop to M:\mfgsys61\help it stopped working - same when I tried other servers on the network. Other folder locations on my local C: drive work OK as well. So something is definitely related to where the .chm file is located more than the file itself.

Very strange.

Thanks to everyone responding for ALL their suggestions.

Here is some summarized info, but I did not want to fill up the screen with
the detail from pages whose links are included below
Hope it helps
Carey
*************************************************************
Here is the microsoft artice detail:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896358

Here is another solution listed by the link:
http://www.helpscribble.com/chmnetwork.html
