8.03.400 and 8.03 on Same Server?

Edward,

Another option to consider that does not require port and/or directory
manipulation or result in performance degradation associated with OS
virtualization is to virtualize the applications themselves. Altiris makes
an application they call the "Software Virtualization Solution" that
effectively isolates applications, including registry settings, drivers,
etc., into compartments they call slices. You can activate, deactivate and
roll back slices as you wish without affecting the base OS or other
applications. The net result is that you can install multiple versions of
the same application without creating port conflicts or overwriting
directories and as a side benefit it is free:

http://www.download.com/3120-20_4.html?qt=altiris
<http://www.download.com/3120-20_4.html?qt=altiris&tag=srch&tg=dl-20>
&tag=srch&tg=dl-20

The only caveat is that you cannot run the two virtualized applications at
the same time.

Michael

Thank you Mark and Jason.

I was planning to go down the route of Jason's option A and probably will,
but I hate changing default directories because I have had that cause issues
in the past (not with Vantage.)

I'll consider VMware and see how that works. I have never worked with it
before but I have known about it for years.

Edward,

Yes, Vista 8.03.400 WILL overwrite your mfgsys803 folder. There is a way
to do this properly and there is an Epicor technical document explaining
what you have to do.

A couple of things to consider:

1. OpenEdge 10.0 & 10.1 use the same ports for PET

2. 305 and 4xx use the same AppServer port numbers 83xx, etc.

3. 305 and 4xx use the same directory structure

Work Around A:

1. Get the Epicor document describing how to make OE10.0 OE10.1
co-exist on the same server

2. Change the AppServer ports to 84xx

3. Install the 4xx in a directory called mfgsys803400

Work Around B:

1. Install on Virtual server as Mark has suggested. Not sure of
any problems...but I am a fan of virtual servers (MS, VmWare, etc.)

Either method you choose you will need to install a new client on each
machine and that includes the .NET 3.0 Framework, WSE 3.0 and Crystal
Reports .NET 3.0 Runtime. Be sure to install the 4xx client into a
different directory on the workstation.

Hopefully this information is helpful.

I just started to research the upgrade to 8.03.400. We have 8.03 running

right up to 8.03.400. After reading the install guide, it appears that

Has anyone installed these versions on the same server? What did you do

I used VMWare Server[1] (which is free) to do this. If I screwed up, I could
restore the VM folder and get a mulligan...

Yes....that's exactly how we have our DEVelopment server setup. Epicor
tech support helped me configure it...and, we use a different port for
ProgressExplorer for the .40x environment......we even had SQL2000 and
SQL2005 on the same box for a while, & that worked OK as well.

Another vote for VMware Server here, why potentialy screw up a
production environment when virtualisation is available ?.

If you do use VMware to setup a test environment, and show it to
users, just make sure that they are aware that the performance will
not match that of the productino server/setup.

VMWare is fantastic, providing a good DR path if you have external
storage. I would very much like to implement it to replace 3 very old
servers, but unless you can separate your storage from the server
machine itself (via SAN or iSCSI to a NAS), you don't get the DR
benefits. As I don't have the budget for adding any external storage, I
elected not to implement VMWare in a production capacity.

Once you start using it, you'll see how easy it really can be. The
"free" version does a great job of handling multiple virtual-machines
hosted in any one physical server. The retail products work together
with your hardware and storage allowing you to seamlessly move a machine
from one physical host to another when, for example, you purchase a
newer/beefier physical host.

Great stuff. Wish I had the $.
