8.03.407 Server Configuration

Thanks for your input. After doing a dump and load, things are much
better, so I think our configuration is okay.

We have a similar configuration and user base but it has grown over the
years:

SBS 2003 for AD, Exchange (with Message Labs in-between), ISA, and file
server.

Server 2003 for Vantage only, added as a member-only server.

Server 2008 (our newest server) for Terminal Services and all Epicor related
web activity: Enterprise Search, Epicor Web, Epicor Portal, and online
Epicor Help.

Our old terminal server is now our Test machine for Epicor 9 and updates
before we apply them to production.

There might be room for some virtualization in there soon! I'm also
considering using the unused Ethernet ports on the Vantage and Portal
machines to create a dedicated link in a different IP subnet to route
webservice traffic. Any thoughts on that would be welcomed.

Hey Randy,

Dell? God help you LOL.. J/K
Â
Okay, the server config on your DB server should be a RAID 1+0 , stay away from RAID 5. Your RAM count is a bit low. You may experience a bit of lag. Let us kow how many users you will have using Vantage.
Â
You are using Server 2003 as the operating system on the Vantage server right, not SBS?
Â
As far as what the server will be, file is fine. Just don't make it a BDC (Backup Domain Controller) by puting DNS or WINS on it. I think that's obvious, LOL.

Anything else, let us know.

We have a 45-user installation of Vantage running on one machine.
It's a Dell with dual quad-core cpu's, 4 GB ram, RAID 10 and
Windows Server 2003 Standard. Right now the peak ram usage is 2.5
GB. We did get into disk paging when we had 15 training databases
running at the same time but since we shut those down and went live,
the production performance has been fine. Performance is fine if the
client machine is of recent vintage and speedy. Our best clients
have Core 2 Duo CPUs and 2 GB ram. Those users see no delays. People
on older hardware, P4-3.2 or older with only 1 GB ram, see some
sluggishness but they don't complain.

We're not running the extra services, just the basic Vantage. (We're
really happy with the performance and reliability of the Dell
servers we've purchased, but then we don't buy low-budget hardware
for critical servers.)

Well, I was poking fun at Dell and I see it hit a few nerves, sorry about that. Like with any hardware manufacturer you get good and bad. I just have had really bad luck with Dell products, but that's just my experience.
Â
We are using a Progress Database and did have performance problems and had to up our RAM. Of course we are using other Epicor products that run in accord with the Vantage. We have 137 Users and 48 international customers Web clients.  We currently are running at 14GB of RAM Quad 3.2 Processers and a RAID 10. Vantage shows no signs of Lag or delay. But again if you have a small amount of user, as Ken does, perhaps you will have very little trouble.

No nerves hear, I was just wondering if there was something bad going on at
Dell. Years ago our IT director loved Gateway and that is not my PC of
choice anymore.

Thank you

Jeff,
Â
As I am sure you are aware, businesses go for the bottom line and Dell is very attractive with the low dollar amount equipment they sell. I believe in the old adage, "You get what you pay for."
Â
I have used Dell since the 3800 and 4300 Poweredge servers, I am dating myself here. The 4300 was a great product, built like a tank. Then the servers built after that had issues that cost us time in repairs which ultimately cost us money. That ranged from the PC's to the Hubs and Switches. I am not sure how well their products work now, but as you know once bitten, twice shy.

Â
Just my 2 cents worth. :)

Rich Riley who runs the framework/tools development team did a
presentation at Perspectives about Web Services, etc.

He suggested creating a separate set of app servers on their own ports for
use with the web services.

I¹m not sure that there¹s enough overhead with the web services to really
matter in terms of wanting a separate network (although this would give you
an extra measure of security since you could restrict access more closely).
The web services themselves are rather slow and I doubt your network is the
bottleneck.
