8.03 407C Server Setup

More is better is the only advice I can give.

I don't look at the size of the drive in terms of more, I look at the number
of drives.

8 73GB is better than 4 146gb drives, but I don't see 8 146gb as being any
different than 8 73gb in terms of performance, total volume size available
being the only real difference between setups. The more drive heads writing
at the same time, the faster your system will be.

Then the standard note to make sure you stick with RAID 1, 0, or 1+0 and not
5, 6, 50, 60 or any of the other quirky setups out there

Ss well as breaking up the drives physically instead of just virtually. For
example, with 8 drives I would do this for a RAID layout: 2 RAID 1 for OS, 2
RAID 1 for Program, 4 RAID 1+0 for DB instead of 8 RAID 1+0 and then
breaking them up with 3 virtual drives for OS, Program and DB.

but that's just my point of view.

We are running 8.03 407C on our test server. We are ordering a new server for our permanent roll-out. I have heard mixed opinions on the drive sizes we should purchase. Can anybody tell me if there really is going to be a huge performance difference between 146gb 15K SAS vs. 73gb 15K SAS. I was always told the speed makes all the difference. Right now, we plan to run 146gb drives. Any feedback would be great.

Thanks
Ken
