8.03 Performance Issues - Where to start troubleshooting?

To all, thank you for the feedback. Now I have a lot of things to try.

I called tech support and they sent the Progress Db tuning guide. They advised me to go through it first. I'm printing it out now.

I have often wondered about mixing 100MB and 1000MB clients. I think most everything is set to auto negotiate. I'll play with forcing them to 1000MB. I have a few running at 100MB that do indeed have 1000MB NICs in them. May need to pull some new wire, easy enough.

After I try to tune the server I want to do a dump and load, sounds like it will help a lot.

When we upgraded from Vantage 6.1 to 8.03 we saw a huge performance decrease in Vantage. I've contacted Epicor a couple times to try to resolve the issues but haven't really gotten anywhere. I've sat in front of the server, many times, to see if there's anything obviously going wrong but haven't found anything.

We purchased a new server for the 8.03 install:

Compaq Proliant DL360
2x Quad Core Xeon E5345 (2.33GHz)
6GB PC-5300 Memory
4x 72GB 15K RPM RAID 10+1
Windows 2003 R2 Standard x64
The OS is on a pair of drives and the DB/OpenEdge is on the other pair.

We upgraded most of our switches to gigabit.
We replaced most of our desktops (some still 100Mb).

We have a terminal server handling about 6 MES sessions and 3 Vantage sessions.

Vantage is at 8.03.408B.

Compared to 6.1, reports load a lot slower but this seems to be constant. What we have noticed is sporadic pauses when using Vantage. For example, when our MES users are clocking in, it will be fine until the 3rd person clocks in and it seems to hang for several seconds. Sometimes I'll be running reports and switching back and forth between modules. It runs fine but then will come to a halt for several seconds and then get better. I get calls once in a while but it seems so consistent that I think people have just gotten used to it. I hear about it most during training or employee meetings.

We occasionally get a, "No servers available" error but it isn't detrimental. Epicor said that one is pretty tough to troubleshoot but I don't think it's related to our performance issues.

I've considered upgrading the server's memory to 24GB but don't know if it will help. It seems to run at about 3GB most of the time, though I have seen it with only about 100MB available.

Any ideas on how to troubleshoot this? If I had an error message it would be easy.

Thanks
When we went from 6.1 to 8.x we also had serious performance issues. We
solved it by doing a dump and load. Have you done that? We did that on
the 6.1 db first because it reduced the conversion time from 20+ hours
to a few hours on a db about 2meg.

Dump and Loads do improve the system's performance. It takes us an
entire weekend to perform one though...

Forgot to mention that... when we went from 6.1 to 8.0 we started over with a new database. Through Epicor support services, we imported parts but we hand-keyed the rest.

I might look into dump and load anyway. We've been live for about 1.5 years. Our current database is 1.7GB. How long might the process take?

Bruce,

I just did a dump and load about a month ago, as I was in the same boat
as you. (i.e. 6.1 -> 8.03.4xx upgrade about 1.5 years ago, etc). I
started at 4:45am on a Saturday (Damn dog woke me up!) and the dump
portion on our 3GB DB was done by 6:00am. The loading was completed by
8:30am. Our scatter factor went from 7.0 to 3.4 and, more importantly,
one of our more vocal critics of the system said that it was much
faster.

Hi Bruce,

I couldn't help but notice that amid all the tech specs for the server
there was no mention of Progress.

I'm assuming that is what you are using? (not SQL)

If so, you need to look at the tuning parameters for Progress to assure
they are set appropriately. Without doing this, no amount of hardware
will help you IMHO.

I kept some of my documentation from tuning our system after
experiencing horrendous performance. If interested and you are running
Progress and I'll share.

Do you see these delays if you run a client session directly on the Server ?

This smells like a network problem to me ....

Are you using Network TEAMing ? If so, make sure that your switch is configured with the correct (matching) protocol ... i.e. FEC, or Switch Enabled Failover, or whatever makes your network connection happy.

Also, don't do "AUTO" on your connection(s) to the Server, force them to 1GB Fdx on BOTH the Server and Switch. (never just ones side)

Also check your switch ports to make sure that they aren't configured for anything that can cause the Switch to periodically re-scan like Auto Routing and things like that.
