[8.03][SQL] Running Vantage Server separate from SQL Server

I actually meant NLB in the generic sense -- not just the software-
based mechanism in Windows. However, Windows NLB is the only one I
have personally setup. Microsoft has a lab that Epicor was using this
week where we tried to get an F5 BigIP switch operational. But the lab
facility was having network problems (nothing to do with Epicor), so
the project had to be rescheduled (I think for late July).

A few customers have been asking about h/w NLB, especially F5 and I
wanted Epicor to see if/what issues exist so we can give some
guidance. I don't really expect any -- Vantage uses a stateless
connection over a simple (and single port) TCP/IP socket. Also, Epicor
has customers on other products using NLB (including F5).

If I have any news on the F5 setup, I can post it here (probably in
August).

We currently run 8.0 on the same server as our SQL server. Do any of you
run Vantage 8.0 or 8.03 separate from your SQL server? Do you have any
problems or tips?

Vantage 8.x will work with the DB on a separate machine. I would
recommend that you use a dual port NIC (1GB at least) on both servers
and setup a dedicated connection between the app server and the DB
server. Let me know if you need more help on setting that up.

The Vantage client is stateless, so you can use NLB (without any server
affinity) is you want to add additional application servers over time.

Are there load balancing methods beyond what NLB offers that Epicor
will support? It would be nice to see support for F5 or Cisco so that
load balancing could encompass more than network requests and could
be a hardware based solution.
