9.05 Typical Installation Time

In addition be aware of your system DSNs and that they are in the x32 environment and the x64 environment. The DSNs run in both. This is something not covered in install guide as it is specific to a split install.

We've been working on installing a test instance of 9.05 for over a week now and we're quickly running out of patience. The installation guides are all over the place, contradict themselves repeatedly, miss steps, and have generally been next to useless.

When we've called support (10+ times) they've found it "amusing" that we even tried to do an install using the instructions. They generally help us around whatever particular issue we're having, but they do it through a collection of things to "try" where no one is clear on the effects of the failed attempts. Once we get an issue fixed we move on to the next step, run into another problem, and start the whole process over again.

Our team is pretty technical and at this point we're beginning to wonder if anyone is able to do this easily or in a reasonable amount of time.

Have others had better success? Did you find a support rep that you could regularly get in contact with that helped you out? Is an installation with a separate DB and APP server something horribly exotic that is excessively difficult to pull off? Is there a secret guide somewhere with all the tips and tricks for getting around the holdups that the installation manual fails to mention?

We just want to get a better understanding of whether we're in the same boat as everyone else or if we're simply missing something.

Thanks for the help.
We install Epicor 9 / 9.5 fairly regularly and as long as you are doing a
fresh install (vanilla Epicor) and you have already previously downloaded
all the 75 GB (exaggerating a bit) worth of patches and such we can do it in
2 - 6 hours (in one sitting depending on whether we want separate app server
vs db etc)

Its actually a fairly straight forward process, where are you getting hung?
The Install Guide is surprisingly ok for the Install Process (its the rest
of the crap that they usually get wrong).

I felt your pain about 8 months ago.

While my company paid to have Epicor install the software, I tried to do it
on my own to no avail.

You are correct, the install guides are not written well. I believe it is
because their upgrade cycle is so fast, no one takes the time to actually
write a manual that works.

After going through a couple of upgrades, the manual makes much more sense
though.

yeah the first time is always the worst.

I found the learning curve was pretty steep, but after a bit it all makes sense. The hardest thing for me was we are running a split DB and APP install and the instructions are written for a single server install. Overall it took me about 5 hours to install everything, and about another 3 getting the goofy stuff ironed out with Epicor Support.

I do them on a regular basis, and I plan on 12 hours if it's a brand new
installation, and 16-20 if it is an upgrade, although it can be longer
depending on how long schema and conversions take. SQL and Progress also are
variables that affect the total time.

While I am sure it could be dropped to 6 or 7 hours, that is tough and would
definitely require a high end server just to process through some of the
stuff.

Thanks for all the replies! I think our biggest issue has been that our install introduces some complications that extend beyond the focus of the installation manuals.

For one, we're installing a separate DB and APP server (as well as Service Connect) and it can be difficult to determine what should be where. Also, we're trying to maximize our utilization of 64-bit environments for the performance benefits, but Open Edge and workstation compatibility issues are making that very difficult to accomplish.

Secondly, this is intended to be our test environment, so we've virtualized everything in Amazon's cloud and while that provides some extremely convenient features, it also creates some networking nightmares.

We haven't yet begun to try to import our 50GB 9.04 DB for the schema change, but that's what's coming next.

Are you all dealing with the same problems with split environments and bit version issues?

I recommend setting up a single server of x32 progress for conversions. It will cut the conversion times down significantly. After that all you do is move the DB from one server to the next.

I know I deal with them.

Are you a progress or SQL DB?

There are different problems with all the different bit versions and such.

And from my own personal point of view, I wouldn't be doing a test
environment somewhere out in the cloud, that's something that I find to be
better completely local.

Also, if you are making a test environment, do whatever you can to keep all
the drives and file paths the same on your test environment as you are going
to have on your production environment.

Also, don't accept any default install locations, don't install anything on
C: you don't have to(Admin console can't be changed) and don't have spaces
in your file paths, it just makes more places for possible errors to occur.

Let me add to Ned's always useful advice:

Install OpenEdge into a rather short folder name. If you plan to use
the new Progress Explorer (not PET), it will crap out on you if you
put it under Program Files or Program Files (x86). The path name is
too long and it won't start.
