Adding Rev Level to Part Number

We use a + to indicate the end of the part and the beginning of the rev.
We have the same issue, in that we may want to stock different revs of the
same part.

I appreciate the feedback. The concern with having a single part
number is that once the part is received into FG's, we lose visibility
of the rev level. We have customers where it isn't uncommon to have
two different revisions of the same part either in our warehouse or
going through our shop.

We are considering adding the Revision level as a suffix to our
manufactured part number (to give us visibility of Rev Level in
Finished Good inventory).

The question we are having is what character to use to designate the
end of the part number and the beginning of the Rev Level.

We are considering using the underscore ( _ ).

Ex: xxx-xxxx_01

It appears that Vantage has no problem with the underscore character,
does anyone forsee problems with barcoding (Dataworks 39) or in any
other situation?

Any feedback is appreciated!

Thanks,

Kelly
Adding a rev to the end of your part number, imho, will cause you
significantly more troubles in the long term. I'm assuming that you are
proposing to add that as part of your part number entry. What happens when
the rev changes, a whole new part number? If you're just concerned with rev
visibility on paper, just tack the rev # field on to the end of the part
number field. A good part numbering scheme won't contain any variable that
changes or might change, ever.

Lot tracking may be another option for you. Have you tried this or
simulated it in a training database?
Maybe even try the rev level as the lot number.
