Adjusting Configuration settings

Nancy

I was fiddling with the settings last week on our 1GB Ram, 2 - 1.4GB processors. 120,000 Block size seemed to really increase the DiskRam size, so I dropped it down considerable. I think I left it at 60,000 for now.

You should be able to edit your .pf's with the database running. It only accesses them on Startup. The startup.pf is in the Progress folder. The Vantage.pf file is in the \vantage\db folder. Then you'll have to stop/start the database for the -Mm settings to take effect.

I thought I would run these changes by you guys.
I have a Server that has 2 - 500mhz Xeon processors and 1 GB memory. (I just
got the memory upgraded from 512 MB). It runs the live and test databases.
The databases are around 700 MB each. This server isn't doing much but
Vantage 5.0.
For the Live DB:
My current setting for # Blocks in DB buffer: 50,0000 (way to low)
thinking of changing to 120,000

Spin Lock is set at 2000 will leave it here.

Message buffer size is 1024 thinking of change to 4096
When I change this, I also have to change the number in the
Vantage.pf and Startup.pf.
I wanted to look at these files, but can't. Can these files only be
viewed or changed when the DB is stopped?

Do these setting sound reasonable?

What would be good settings for the Test database?

Thanks for the help.

Nancy,

I recently upgraded my Vantage server's memory to 1 gig, I modified my two
life databases to 55000 each and I am getting error messages of running out
of virtual memory. If you have only one live database, I will suggest
100,000.

I certainly would go with the Message buffer size of 4096, you will have to
change that in any reports or startup files for vantage but once the
settings are right you'll see a definate inprovement in performance. As to
your # of message blocks, that may be a bit much. We have twin AMD 1.2 gig
processors and a gig of memory, I have mine set at 90,000 this will eat HALF
my memory reserve. I have some other things running on this server so it
matters. Personally, I would look at the comments you get, then talk to
support before you make a final decision.
