Since I have been monitoring the Yahoo! merger list, I have seen a LOT of
confusion and concern about the Yahoo! ID (aka YID) that is now required if
you want to access the web site. (Just a reminder, a YID is _not_ required
if you are doing everything by email; its only required if you are going to
their web site.)
One of the big concerns is that they require you to respond to the Gender
question and then it shows up for everyone else to see. Since your only
options are Male/Female (no options for Undisclosed or anything in-between),
this has quite a number of people concerned and upset.
Yahoo! has actually done a pretty good job of letting the user choose what
the rest of the world sees and doesn't see. The problem is that they don't
do a real good job of explaining the differences between Account Information
and Profiles.
Your Account Information is a single set of information that identifies you
to Yahoo! There is very little required information, but they do require
your birth date, your gender, and your email address. You don't have to
give your name, address, telephone number, or anything else although they do
ask for other information.
Once you have a YID you can go to profiles.yahoo.com/<your_YID> to create
and edit Profiles. Since my YID is dcctxs, I went to
profiles.yahoo.com/dcctxs (I'm not worried, you don't have my password :)
and found that I can have MORE THAN ONE profile because profiles are tied to
email addresses. And this is where I can decide what the rest of the world
can see about me. If I want the Vantage list to see that my company is a
foundry, then I can set my profile to show that information. If I belong to
another group that I don't want to see this information, I can create
another profile that hides this information and assign that profile to the
other group.
By default, any information you entered into your Account Information is
visible in your Profile. The Profile is where you need to go to hide any
information you are not comfortable showing to the rest of the world.
Bottom line: you have one YID and your Account Information (which only
Yahoo! can see) is tied to the YID. You can have more than one email
address tied to your YID, and you can setup a different Profile for each
email address. The profile determines what information the rest of the
world can see about you.
Hopefully, my attempt to explain this has been more help than harm! :-/
