Advanced Planning and Scheduling

Hello:
We have been using APS for some time. Our current working
system is Release 3.0c Build 1 which brings in jobs and status from
Vantage thru sql using an interface program called DataSync.
We have also installed Version 5.0 build 88 and I am in the
process of testing that. Whereas Release 3.0 is uni-directional,
(taking information from vantage but not sending it back) Version 5.0
is bi-directional. Version 5 sends data to APS from Vantage using
XML. Certain events in Vantage trigger this process. Information
is pulled into Vantage from APS as a 'batch' process which must be
initiated by the user.
This bi-directionality thing is our current stumbling block. I
do my schedule as forward scheduling/finite capacity. This allows
some jobs to show a finish time beyond the customer want date. Also,
because I use finite capacity settings on most of my workcenters,
there are no 'over-loaded' workcenters. This works fine for me. I
adjust the schedule by off-loading or changing workcenters until I
have no late jobs. (late jobs are easy to identify in APS.) The
problem comes from what I will call the 'second look'.
APS is one way to look at the capacity/load/schedule picture.
Currently, Vantage furnishes us with another look at this picture
because, in our current set-up, APS and Vantage are not bi-
directionally integrated.
When (with version 5) we start pulling information into Vantage
from APS, capacity, load, and schedule will be the same in both
systems. Before we do this we are going to find another way to look
at this information so we can continue to have the 'second look'.
Sorry this is so long. I think APS is a great system, tons of
features designed by people who really knew scheduling. And I do tend
to get a little excited, ask anyone who knows me. I will stop now.
Feel free to contact me if you want to.
