Problem has always been that once MS decides to integrate 3rd party
functionality the "Competition" dies fast. The MS product can be really
basic and just this side of functional and it still happens. People say
that so and so has a much better product and people who know better will
still buy it ... but ... the "Average" person just lives with the "Free"
built in functionality and the 3rd party vendors die from lack of volume.

By the way ... Does anyone remember DOS at about $ 44 retail? I seen that
Win-2000 PRO at retail is now about $ 266.20 (CDW Full License) ... All of
that FREE stuff sure did add up !

Hmm, come to think of it... That $44 copy of DOS 6.x HAD an anti-virus
program, and a bunch of other add-ons. And a better backup utility than
windoze of the time.

How soon till they throw in ERP & CRM as an integral and non-removable part
of the OS? ;)

How about a future where MS simply says ... "For X amount per year per
employee you get everything." Operating systems, compilers, mail, MRP,
anti-virus, web support, etc. and it's all integrated.

And since they have something like 95% of the market in MRP ( like they do
with Office ) their MRP package can communicate seamlessly with any other
companies MS-MRP package in real time using built in operating system API's
via NET ...

Terminator 4 anyone ? ( the MS machine wins )

As I recall when MS sub-licensed a down-scaled version of Norton Speed Disk
(for DOS 5, I think), their implementation was pretty poor. Peter Norton
was pretty wise NOT to sub-license the bells & whistles. Same story goes
for SD for 9x. When it came to NT, 2K, and XP, I think they sub-licensed
from Executive Software's DiskKeeper (Lite). Once again, a pretty poor
implementation IMHO. Norton dba Symantec STILL does a better job. I just
wonder how good an implementation MS will come across with when they do the
AV thing. I'm not holding my breathe.

So MS has infected EPICOR already ... Now THAT explains those maintenance
