Alternative connection to Cloud

During a painful outage with Epicor we had a user find a “workaround” to access Kinetic. Can you tell me if Epicor is aware of this and if supported by Epicor. Also would or could there be any potential issues accessing Kinetic this way.

  1. Open Epicor in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Press Alt + F.
  3. Go to More tools > Apps > Install this site as an app.
  4. Name it Epicor and click Install.
  5. Pin it to your taskbar when prompted. (optional)

This opens Epicor like a standalone desktop app without browser tabs or the address bar. It still uses Edge in the background, but it is cleaner and easier to manage.

I opened a ticket with support and this was their response no real answer if supported or not. This was their response. That is actually very impressive! But we are not aware that this is possible. It is not hindering or affecting anything so this should be possible. I would recommend posting this in Epicor Ideas so many other users can have access to this.

Does anyone have and knowledge on this connection?

I don’t think there’s any harm is doing it. It’s not really an alternative connection to Epicor. It’s still using Edge in the background and connects to the same endpoints. It just cleans up the UI and makes it an “app”. You can do this with a lot of sites now days. You can even do it with EpiUsers. If you’re signed into Edge, your work profile will sync the app across devices.

We did this with our MES stations to keep it simple for the shop floor view during our switch from client to browser.

It makes a nice icon for users on the desktop/taskbar.

Never heard of this… but it works in Chrome too:

  1. Open Epicor in Chrome
  2. click the overflow menu (3-dot menu upper right)
  3. select “Cast, save, and share”
  4. select Install page as app

It still opens a browser, but a somewhat more restricted browser (sorta kinda like the EO Browser we came to know and (ahem) “love”?)

This is how we installed in on the desktop for users as like you say it makes it a clean alternative. As have been said, you can do it in most browsers.

Yeah, it’s not a workaround, it’s just a different version of the browser. If SAAS goes down in the browser, it’s going down in the “app” too.

But it is super nice. I use it for Jira, and our doc system (which is discourse, like epiusers) to separate things from normal browser things.

Even when it’s not on the browser bar, you can do it with the options down here.

I’ve said this before… WhatsApp, Messenger, Slack, Discord, Zoom, MS Teams, Evernote, Notion, Asana, Outlook, Excel, Word you name it all have an Electron App. No one likes using the web versions

So people don’t have to juggle tabs, or have a dedicated browser. Now their Chrome extensions are conflicting with UI etc…

Also when you open a hyperlink thats a Report, it can open a smaller window… Behave just like Classic :slight_smile:

Did I mention Edge Agent could just be baked in…

Sounds like a Community Project where is @GabeFranco and @klincecum

BTW if Epicor detects you have Electron and login, it will write the Session to Local Storage automatically for Electron to consume. Someone started it and abandoned it.

Imagine a UI where Reports arent using 100% of my 52" monitor :slight_smile:

I’m just mentioning that it’s not always there. It doesn’t show up in Jira for example.

It’s not creating an application its just creating a shell with Edge loaded with most of the web browsing spefic parts hidden Their should be no issues. FYI you can do this to most site like outlook.com to make web based outlook look like a desktop app. They are all PWA basically.
