If we create an Alternate method for a part that could be changed from inside to subcontract, how is the Alternate method picked when creating a firm job from MRP?
There is the option to pick Alternate method when just creating a job from the Job Entry screen, but I couldn’t find anything about alternate method when creating job from MRP.
As far as I know, MRP ignores Alternate Methods. There may be a caveat where it takes it into account if you’re multi-site and you set your Alt Method under Part > Site > Planning… but I’m not multi-site and haven’t had the opportunity to experiment/verify.
MRP doesn’t know ahead of time you want to subcontract it out. It will just suggest a job to make it and tosses in the base method. Whoever makes the decision to subcontract it out will need to make the adjustment manually.
Let MRP create an unfirm job for the part you need. It will use the base method.
Firm the job, then Delete All on the method and get details from the alternative method you want to use.
We used alt methods (and MRP) extensively in 2017 and that was years before we bought the multi-site module. It’s not only a multi-site thing. Just set that Primary Alternate Revision.
When you do need to set it up for multi-site, we do that now, so I can help if needed. It was… challenging.
You can set the primary alt method on the site > planning tab. MRP will pick that up as the default. You can also change that primary alt method (e.g., subcontracting for a while then bringing it back in) and MRP will clean up any unfirm jobs. You’d have to fix any firmed jobs.
If you are creating jobs manually, you have the option of creating from the method or the alt method.
