AntiVirus - Beware new version of ESET NOD32

Thanks too. Looks like we'll be sticking with 2.7 for some time.

Thanks for the heads up.

I was actually thinking about switching early next year. I guess I will wait
until after they release a patch or two

Hey Everyone...

A month ago I asked about recommended antivirus software. A lot of
responders said they were using ESET's NOD32, so after a little more
research bought license packs for all our PCs.

Just wanted to let the list members here that are running it to BEWARE of
Version 3.0!

I downloaded v3.0 and loaded it on my own PC first, and had nothing but
troubles:
* It overwrote some of explorer's file type associations, and clobbered an
explorer context menu installed by other software.
* Crashed consistently with errors in Ekrn.exe when web browsing.
* Reported "system at risk, scanning disabled" when the config screen said
it WAS enabled.
* It's auto-update stopped working, reporting something like "Unknown
critical error 0x011a". Could not get auto updates working again.

I reported this to their tech support twice, but got NO response. Finally,
3 weeks after the initial support request, I got an email with a case
number. But 3 days later still no contact.

I also found out the version 3.0 I installed just came out at the beginning
of November, replacing the previous 2.7 version. Ahh... that explains a
little!

Called sales guy to request a refund (still barely within the 30 days
offered.) We talked, and he got me to a support rep who admitted to MANY
problems & bugs, management forcing premature release of the new software,
and a huge support backlog, etc.

So if you're running 2.7 now, I'd suggest sticking with it. 3.0 appears to
still be in beta test! There were also reports scattered around the web
about 3.0 having a noticeably higher resource consumption compared to the
older version.

Thank you as well. My AVG license is expires on the 24th and I was thinking
of moving to ESET. Maybe not.

PS "...We talked, and he got me to a support rep who admitted to MANY
