We are using the Microsoft Messaging that is build into Windows NT 4.0 for
internal mail. It's free. For external mail I just purchased CommuniGate
Pro software from Stalker systems. www.stalker.com It was $999 for 250
users and is a full featured mail server. You can set it up as a mail relay
or just for your internal users. It has great security and is easy to
manage. You can also set it up to use RBL servers to cut down on spam.

I believe that the global alerts use your local e-mail client to forward the
messages. When an alert is triggered it looks to see if you have a mail
client running. If you do it finds the entry in the address list that it
needs and sends the mail. If you don't have your e-mail client running it
just goes to a message error log in Vantage, so this means Vantage must not
care what type of mail server you use as long as your client is loaded and
configured properly.

Hope this helps

A free solution would be to setup a POP/IMAP/HTTP server running on Linux.

You can still run Outlook or Outlook Express on your MS clients. It doesn't
have all the bells and whistles of exchange, but you can't beat the price.
If you haven't heard of IMAP, it lets you keep the messages on the server
and therefore offers the ability to access your messages from multiple PCs
and the choice of selectively downloading messages (good if accessing via
dialup).

We have a rack mount linux box that we use as an internet gateway, and used
to use for an e-mail server. The main reason we don't use it any more was
because there wasn't any way to set up server-based virus protection, so we
switched to an NT exchange server for e-mail.

The linux box is quite stable

Thaddeus/Richard,
A host of anti virus companies (among which TrendMicro and F-Secure) have
been focusing on Linux versions of their products lately:
http://www.europe.f-secure.com/products/anti-virus/firewalls/linux.shtml

Around the summer I hope to exchange Exchange 5.5 for a Linux based IMAP
program. If your client wants a low cost solution, then Linux would be
definitely the way to go. I found that Linux based products do have all
the bells and whistles, maybe not as efficiently packaged as a Microsoft
product, but then you don't end up with, (and don't pay for) bells and
whistles you really didn't want in the first place.
Here is a link to a nice intro on IMAP Linux:
http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue35/jao.html

My big project this year is to decrease headaches, increase ROI and security
by reducing the number of programs with names that start with "MS-".

HTH,

Paul Siebers
(hoping for an official Vantage-for-Linux release)
Check out www.kyzo.co.uk

We've been using one of their Net-Inter-Net boxes for around 18 months -
solid as a rock - even using MS.
