Hello All,
We have some processes and procedures which do not fit the Epicor model and
Epior is talking about having us contract with them to develope procedures to
fit our needs. We have .Net programmers on staff and we understand the
responsibility involved, but we do not KNOW what the capabilities are of the SDK
tool. Can someone fill us in on what the SDK tool offers?
Thank you,
Gene

You can do everythign you want with the SDK. however here are the reasons
why you should NOT buy it.

1. Its Expensive
2. It has NO Documentation
3. The little documentation it has is all wrong
4. They charge you to help you even thought their docs are wrong
5. Upgrading after you use ti its nearly impossible
6. You can do everything or damn near everything with BPM,
and Customization.

We own it and we don't use it. I really recommend that you do not purchase
this unless you are prepared to suffer :(

The SDK will let you do just about anything you can think of. You have the
source to the client along with the ability to create custom tables and the
associated BO's, etc

However, it does make the upgrade process substantially more difficult.
Also, the vast majority of what you can do with the SDK can also be done
without it.

What kind of changes do you have in mind?

Ditto Jose's comments. Stay away from the SDK. If you are adamant
about buying it, drop maintenance on your system because you won't be
upgrading for a while / forever.

We had it and never needed to use it so we no longer have it. We thought it would be required for some items but customization and BPMs can handle all our stuff. The only thing I did use it for was to get descriptions of what the different methods do from the code comments. Every one of them has a brief description.

Does the SDK include the code for all of the Business Objects too?
Could it be used for debugging errors?

I know, you pay support for that but it could cut down on the time
taken to identify why code does what it does.

Mark W.
I think that's the real kicker isn't? I thought I heard that you don't
get the source code for Business Layer.

You only get the source code for the client (.Net)

While there are certainly bugs in the client that can be fixed by having
the client source code, most of the "real" bugs are in the business
layer (Progress 4GL).

For me, the only thing left that I wish I could create is a Report Data
Definition from scratch. Everything else can be accomplished with UI
customizations, BPMs, and accessing the business layer.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
While I agree with most of the comments about support and price, for our
company the SDK has been a valuable tool.

There is a VERY steep learning curve, and you need to stick to it.
To get up and running is will cost a fair chunk of change, as you will
need help learning how everything works together.
The best way to learn is to first take the SDK course, then spec out an
application and have an epicor resource develop it with your SDK
developer. Once you understand how it all goes together, it will be
easier on the second application.

You WILL need help from epicor programmers to get you going, without
some examples from epicor on how to write a business object, I would
still be stuck in neutral.
You WILL need to be familiar with Visual Studio (currently at 2005) for
the UI and Progress ABL for the business objects (if you are a
programmer, ABL is not that hard to learn and the on-line help is pretty
good).
Upgrading is a pain, but not impossible, Much easier than it ever was
in Avante.

The SDK allows you to develop applications with (almost) the same tools
as epicor programmers (they have different deployment tools, but the
programming tools will be the same). The hardest part is understanding
the relationship between the Business Objects, Interface files,
Adapters, and UI's.
Here is a quick overview:
1. Use Appbuilder to create you custom tables.
2. Use Object Designer to create the Business Object (BO) and Interface
(IF) dll's this will reference your custom tables .
3. Use visual studio to create the adapter (AD) dll that references the
IF and BO (which is a wrapper for all of you custom procedures).
4. Use App builder to create the "back end" program, which does all the
actual work. This is where you write your procedures. Then you have to
update the adapter to reference the new procedure calls.
5. Use Visual Studio to develop the UI, which references the Adapter,
which in turn reference the IF and BO.
6. Deploy your application (all 4 dll's)
7. Put it in the epicor menu structure and start using it.

I have used the SDK to develop some 20 custom applications that we use
to run our business but were not part of epicor. Once deployed, these
applications run seamlessly within epicor and can access any data
available in any table. We have also made extensive use of BPM's, so I
know that they can't do everything I needed to do.

As for upgrading, I have upgraded my custom apps 6 times, all the way
from epicor 803.403 to epicor 905.604a. You WILL need a development
server to perform the upgrades.

The first upgrade took two weeks, while that last one about 3 days to
perform. To make sure your live system isn't down for the duration of
the upgrade, you need to perform the upgrade on a separate development
system. Most of the time required is for upgrading and recompiling all
custom dll's (applications) to be compatible with the version of epicor
you are upgrading to. Once this is complete, upgrading the live system
takes the same amount of time as upgrading a standard, unmodified
system.

As most people have said, support for the SDK is non-existent. You need
to find back-door contacts or get in writing up front who you go to if
you have an issue with anything that they broke going from one version
to the next. If you have an issue with your own app, you will be on
your own, or have to pay for a programming resource to help you out.

So is it worth it? I guess that depends on how much time and money you
are willing to put into it and how resourceful you are. If you need
functionality that is not part of the epicor suite and critical to your
business, it sure comes in handy.

If you compare the XML file from a BAQ Report to that of a Report Data
Definition they have some significant differences.

Mainly that in the BAQ Report puts all the data in in BAQReportResult
table where the XML from a RDD gives you the individual tables
separated, which allows for more complex reporting writing.

For example, try creating a BAQ Report that prints out the Method of
Manufacture.

Isn't baq report sort of like that?...
No you don't get the Bo code

There are two processes that come to mind immediately:
(a) The Credit Hold process does not even come close to fitting our model. We
require more than just the credit limit of a customer.
(b) Our warehouses are constantly moving inventory to make efficient use of
space, but if a Part/Lot is allocated to an order, they cannot move it. I was
thinking of a process to allow moving within the warehouse.

You do not need the SDK to change these processes necessarily, you can use a
combination of BPM's, Data Directives, Customization, Service Connect Work
Flows etc.

For example for the Credit Hold process depending on what you need, you can
make use of UD Tables / Fields to store additional information and put in
place BPM's and external processes that take care of some stuff.

For example (since I assume you already have programmers on staff) you can
tap directly into the Epicor BO's from an external .NET program (IE create a
windows service or something of that sort, that handles pretty much anything
you need)
You can go as far as using a BPM to replace the Base Directive
of anything related to Credit Hold (not recommend unless you know exactly
what you are doing)

My point is that Epicor being SOA gives you almost unlimited ways
to interact with its BO's and Data so there is no real need for an SDK. If
you care to explain a bit more about your process we may be able to provide
you a more detailed plan that may get what you want.

Another example for the WareHouses / moving parts around we just finished
writing a customization that would allow us to swap inventory of entire
warehouses or bins all with soley BPM's and customization.

Sorry for continuing to reply to this topic, but we bought the SDK and no
one told us how awful the documentation and support was.I would have wanted
someone to tell us and rather you didn't have to waste your money if you
don't need to.

Or you can just look in the XML files in the client directory.

.net Reflector is a great tool if you want to write serious customizations in the .net layer

Its a .NET decompiler / Debugger.

You can feed it any part of the Epicor Client and see the source code . You
can also (if you buy the fancy version 100$) hook onto the running program
and debug it step by step to seee what they did.
