APM & APM+ Installation

As someone who has done this a ton of times, my best recommendation is to do
this on a server that is completely fresh and has nothing else installed on
it.

Installations I have done have ranged from taking 5 days to sort through the
entire install and get it working correctly, to being able to get the
installation done and working over the course of about 3 hours.

Those 3 hour installations have always been done on a brand new installation
of an OS without anything being done to it at all. The permissions and com
settings can be really weird at times, and minor errors in config files and
settings really can throw things out of whack and take excessively long to
sort out.

Avoid MS SBS as the OS at all costs!

Also, version 2.7 will not work with the Express version of SQL anymore,
also, there are some problems at times with the 2.6 DB with all the
documents pre-configured, sometimes there are errors upgrading it to 2.7,
but you don't actually need to do a full installation of 2.6 to get the DB
and its contents available to you on the server.

Personally, I kind of like the completely empty DB with 2.7 instead of all
the pre-configured stuff in the Epicor built database, with the amount of
changes you need to make for all your customizations, it's often just easier
to start from scratch in the first place and allow yourself to setup your
own plans for what fields you want, and where they are located on your own
documents. I am not sure the time differential is really any different in
the long run.

Also, while I think it is a completely outdated technology that no one
should be using anymore, if you plan on faxing anything, then it will be
extremely difficult to get setup and working through a virtual machine.

I installed myself.... the trick is to install 2.6 version first, cause it
has all the Epicor form templates...then upgrade to 2.7...If you call tech
support they will help you along.... honestly its a real PITA to install....

I am looking to get APM/APM+ up and running. For those running APM/APM+, did you do the install yourself or did Epicor do it? If yourself, how difficult to get it functioning correctly?

If it matters, my install will be on a VM Windows 2008 Server w/ SQL Server 2008.

Jeff,

I just did a clean install of APM 2.7 the same way you're going to do it on sql 2008 and server 2008 on a VM. It's not very hard but it is a very lengthy install. One piece of advice to you.. do not install with via a remote desktop connection. It will not install right, install it from the console or install VNC. The install documentation is pretty good and definitely doable by a technical person.

I agree, it can be done. We had an earlier version which installed OK, but had a constant event viewer error...Then suggested upgrade...We ran into problems that I think were mostly due to file paths and not uninstall or reinstall to same place - I don't recall. So, we did end up going to support at that point. Dan Pringle from doc link is very knowledgeable and also can answer questions or give extra tips about the software. So, as long as you do a clean install, I suggest to try yourself (it is lengthy). If you have a problem, ask them for help.

Thanks Jose and Karen. I may give this a try. I am also looking to make the move to E9 and just looking to spend my money wisely. I appreciate the input.
