Application Servers

Oh ok... I downloaded the document, I see what they're saying now. They're talking about CPU limitation of virtual servers guest operating environment. VMware (free version) limits you to 2 cores (not sure what the commercial edition limits are, probably 6 or 8), Microsoft Hyper-V limits you to 4 cores. Either way you slice, you're going to need multiple virtual application servers to handle the processing load. I really want to know why you'd even consider doing this? Future expansion planning? You do realize you'd have to setup a load balancer or DNS round-robin (the crappy way of doing load balancing) for your clients to connect to that many application servers.

The problem that we have encountered is that if running a large report or if a report hangs for some reason you can usually guess which appserver is hosting the problem report and kill it. This will only cause errors to show up for users that were on that appserver, which using epicors recommendation is 3. For environments with limited RAM this can be a life saver on performance.

Can you qualify what you mean by application server? If you're referring to appserver (ie epicor's oe code) or you referring to a physical machine. If it's appserver, ya usually there's a process for 3-4 users, this way multiple appservers run and utilize more than just 1 CPU core. If everyone connected to 1 appserver process, it would be horribly slow. If you meant physical machine, 1 is fine for up to ~150 users if you spec it out correctly (my opinion of course). When you say virtual environment... virtual servers or terminal services?

Which Epicor document is this?

Also, what do you mean by application servers? Do you mean total individual
servers for all applications, including SQL, Third party, etc or are you
talking about just application servers for the core program itself?
