Attaching a folder to part numbers

Kerry, could I also receive your executables?
Please email to jim_chance@...

Is there a way to attach a" folder" to a part number instead of a particular file
Thank you

Hi Jim

We struggled with the some issues around link maintenance, and have stopped attaching docs directly at all. Instead we save the files in a couple of network locations, with the part numbers as part of the file names.

I made a couple of search buttons in Part Tracker and Part Entry that writes part number to the clipboard, launches FileSeek (freeware), and launches an Autohotkey (freeware) executable to paste the Part number into the FileSeek search engine. It might sound complicated, but it's really pretty simple and bullet proof.

This has given us considerable flexibility, allowing us to access CAD files directly, supplier data etc, and omits our "previous revisions" folders. No more updating links! And the great news is that it works for all existing parts.

I can supply source codes etc offline if it helps.

(same theory could works with any other search criteria - eg sales order number / Job number / Serial Number / PO Number... I've recently started doing this with serial number, linking much of our quality process information.)

regards
Kerry.

Thanks Kerry
yes that might be helpful my direct email is jproteau@... I didn't think vista would let me do it i am just trying to stay inside and leverage the system as much as possible without having to link 10 different files to a part

Jim,

We have tried getting .zip files attached which can be done with document management, but when opening them we always get the open with screen and then an error message that says it can't find it, but when you press OK on the error message box it DOES open up the file, it just isn't very user friendly.

Does anyone else have any experience with attaching files versus documents?

I think Kerry's work around has some potential!

We attach folders with PDFs, emails, drawings, spreadsheets, etc. to
jobs by naming the folders (job #).v. We have an association to open .v
"documents" using windows explorer. Not the most eloquent but it works.

Hi Kerry,

Your design sounds really interesting! I'd like more information on it, too, please.

Thanks in advance -
Laraine

Good day,

We purchase a fair bit of miscellaneous product that we sell outright to the customer. No further processing, just buy it and sell it for more. For example, our customer might buy several stock items, and then ask for a display box for it all. We don't stock the display box, nor do we want to go to the trouble of creating a part number etc. for it. We would end up with way too many part numbers. When we order the display box, is there a way to link the cost of the box to the sales order? I can only find links for jobs.

We are on Vantage 8.03.408b

Thanks a lot for your help folks.

Hi Kerry: I would be very interested in receiving source code, etc. We are beginning a project to reduce our dependence on paper and your process sounds like a great solution to link maintenance issues. My email is: vjoseph@....

Thanks!
