Backups -- Off Topic

Hi Jason,

Yes, I did mean over the internet offsite. Thanks for the
consideration points that you gave me. I will keep them in mind!

Anyone using (or have heard of anyone else using)an offline data
backup solution? We're looking at Data Protection Services and
looking for some feedback from anyone out there.

Amy,

By "offline" do you mean still onsite, but not on the same server (like
a SAN?). This is a pretty good option, but does not protect you from
building or environmental problems.

If you are meaning "offline" as over the Internet, I've heard of other
companies that do this. We haven't begun recommending it just because
most of our clients tend to have limited upload bandwidth and still like
to have a physical medium to send offsite (to each their own I suppose).
The initial set of data can take awhile to populate - check to see if
DPS will allow you to send your data out on DVD or Tape, etc. as sending
this over the NET could be rather painful. Once this is populated, then
the incremental backups are fairly quick.

Questions to ask: How this handles Exchange Server and SQL Server
backups (assuming you use both). What happens in the event of a network
failure or server failure? Does the backup agent kick in when service is
restored? How can I determine that I have a good backup (log files,
alerts, etc.)?

The reason I bring up Exchange server is because Exchange needs to have
the log files backed up and purged otherwise you end up with hundreds of
5mb transaction log files and can make your available disk space drop in
a hurry. Most backup programs - including the Native Windows 2003 Backup
- take care of this for you.

Hope this information is helpful.

Anyone using (or have heard of anyone else using)an offline data
backup solution? We're looking at Data Protection Services and
looking for some feedback from anyone out there.
