Backups

Sarah,

One thing you should do is to set up a test database and restore your backup
to it in order to prove you backups work!

THANK YOU to everyone who responded to this message!! Our Network
Administrator was on vacation for 2 weeks and called in the middle of his
vacation and said he is not coming back - just quit like that. So, I was
thrown in and while getting up to speed realized that he had not backed up
Vantage on the tape back-up for several months! Very scary, but thanks to
you all, it is now working properly! It's been a rough few days, problem
after problem with the network... finding more and more things done wrong as
well... funny how it seems like everything that could go wrong did!! Thanks
again, you guys saved me once again!

I am having a problem with my backup. I want the back-up file that is
created to be placed on the file server. I have mapped a drive and edited
our backvan file and when I run this directly, it works. HOWEVER, when this
is run through the at scheduler, it does not run and does not create the
back-up to the other server. I need to figure this out, because only our
file server gets backed up daily. Any suggestions would be very much
appreciated!

Drives that you map when you're logged in as a GUI user don't necessarily
get mapped when an process is started from the AT scheduler. Try putting
an explicit command in your process to unmap and re-map the drive, like:

NET USE M: /DELETE
NET USE M: \\SERVER\SHARENAME

You can type: NET USE /? at a command prompt to see other useful options.

In order for this to work, you need to have the server system account map
the drive. If you don't, it won't recognize the drive you're referring to.

I have the backvan script create the backups on the Vantage server. Then,
before the daily file server backup, but after everyone is gone (less
network traffic), I run a script called vcopier.bat from the at scheduler.
This copies everything I consider vital from the Vantage server to the file
server that gets backed up.

vcopier.bat:
_____

net use * /d /y
net use v: <file://\\major3\Backups> \\major3\Backups /u:major\backupexec
xpassxxx
net use w: <file://\\major3\epicor> \\major3\epicor /u:major\backupexec
xpassxxx
copy v:\*.* d:\Admin\Vantage\Backups
xcopy w:\vantage\userform d:\admin\vantage\userform /s
xcopy w:\vantage\empphoto d:\admin\vantage\empphoto /s
net use * /d /y

_____

The first line, deletes all mapped drives.

The next two map two different directories on my Vantage server (major3).
This example maps the drives with the user backupexec from the major domain
with a password of xpassxxx. The format is /u:domain\user password

The next three lines copy the files to the file server.

The last line deletes all mapped drives.

I'm running this script from the file server, not the vantage server. Both
servers are NT 4, SP 6. If you have any questions, let me know.

We had the same problem here. Stephen found out that if you schedule the
job to put the backup file on the Vantage server it would work. We then use
a program called Second Copy to move the file out to the file server.

You probably want the schedule service to run on an account other than
SYSTEM, if you want the service to have permissions to other computers on
the domain. You have to have the "Run As" service running.

In windows 2000, you would check the "Log On" tab in the properties, choose
'this user" and type the user name and password.

I do not know if this functionality exists in NT.

One other tricky thing I should mention about scheduling on a Server... Make sure you enter the Admin password when you set up the scheduled task, otherwise it won't run no matter how good your batch file is. And it won't tell you that it needs the password, nor will it tell you why it didn't run. Just another little thing to check.

Do you know where your Network Administrator went on vacation? I'm
thinking I could use a vacation myself ...
