Don't summarize the table unless you don't need to impose criteria limits on any fields in it, base a calc field upon it in anyway - or just plain want the ability to see the detail (perhaps through an expandable detail dashboard).
Instead (when setting up the joins) indicate you want the first join linked record instead of all.

I writing a search baq for quotes. I found that each Salesman linked to a
quote is stored in a separate table but in sales order entry, all the
salesmen are stored in one field. My problem is trying to write a baq for
the quote because in order to display the salesmen you have to link to the
other table, resulting in duplicate quote lines if you have multiple
salesmen. It is very awkward. IS there a way to use the summarize table
feature to summarize the salesmen into one field?
