Bar Code (Clock in)

Chris,

I developed a test app in VB 6.0 that acted as a go-between for the user
and Vantage. It used XML scripts on the backend to drive the screen
inputs and to determine what to expect next from Vantage. Also, it was
intelligent enough to detect barcode scanner input and reject user
keystrokes (users can't type that fast!). Also, since the barcode was
not mimmicing keystrokes, I added a checksum value to the barcode so
users couldn't simply cut/paste other users IDs. It was an attempt to
force the user to actually scan their barcode.

Anyway, We have not revisited this app since it was tested as it ran
into some issues with the Vantage windows/etc., not to mention that
no-one was thrilled to see an automatic tool that would drive the
Vantage screens automatically. But perhaps the same idea could be
applied to your issue. a separate app running in the system tray could
watch for a particular Vantage screen, and when that screen appears, it
could intercept the keystrokes and redirect them accordingly, as long as
they meet certain criteria (typing speed, format, etc).

Chris,
Is your scanner USB? I have found USB scanners don't seem to be as
adjustable as the "keyboard wedge" style that plug into the PS2 keyboard
port. If this is a test scanner and USB, you might want to consider
this,
if you have invested already, I might have another help.
You might find it helpful to include some characters that create an
effective delay, but don't send any net data to Vantage. For instance,
I
have used the backspace character for this purpose in the past.
One method to test is to scan the barcode into notepad and examine how
fast
the text is entered. Then play with settings and see what the results
are.
Typically the text entry does have to be rather slow to work.
You might also consider calling the tech support for the scanner. When
I
called, the provider of our USB scanner was able to give me an
undocumented
setting that slowed the data down more than the documented settings
would.
Good luck,
Aaron Hoyt

Thanks,

I've tried that already. I have increased it to the maximum of 40ms in
the product manual.

Chris,
I am going to bet it's a speed issue. Can you slow down the speed the
keys
are sent through your scanner?
I find this often, the keys will be sent before the sift screen shows
up.
Give it a shot,

I have created the following bar code to allow for a single scan at
clock in but it won't get past the screen for shift entry.

"*" & ({empbasic.EMPID}) & "$M" & "$M" & "$M" & "*"

We are on vantage 6.1.530 crystal 8.5.0.217

Scanner is a Symbol LS3408

Code 39 Full ASCII is enabled with a key stroke delay of 40ms

I have set up other single scan bar codes that work fine but it seems
the pop up screen for shift entry breaks this one. Anyone have any
thoughts as to how to get around this?

Thanks,

Chris
