Has anyone using data collection had success combining the Job No, Asm, and
Operation into one bar code that when scanned would fill in all fields?
Also employee id and shift on the badge in one scan?
Basically looking for ideas on streamlining the data collection process.
Any ideas or comments appreciated.
Thanks,

Darren,
I don't think its possible using Vantage Data Collection. Caesar Dev. Data
Collection, on the other hand, is setup to use the default shift unless you
need to change it. Clocking in is much faster this way. It also inputs Job
Number, Assembly, and Operation in one scan. Its amazing what software can
do when the seller pays attention to what its customers want.

I have not had a chance to try this yet but I intend to. The approach I
will take will be to imbed scanner specific control characters in the
barcode at the end of each field. The scanner has control codes to cause a
<tab> character which should skip to the next screen field. According to
the vendor for our Welch-Allyn scanners this is a very common method to
allow scanning without having to use the keyboard to move to the next field.
I suppose all three could be strung together to allow one scan but if
validation fails in any one field the remaining "scan" characters could end
up in the wrong field and confuse the operator. I would prefer that my
users scan each seperately and take note of any errors (wrong asm or oper
scanned, etc..). You might want to check out the manual for your scanners
and see if they reference the control characters that would cause a <tab>.

Darren,
Each barcode reader may have a different set of codes to represent
keystrokes, so this response may not be exact for you. Check your barcode
hardware manual to verify the right codes for you.
Remember that a barcode is nothing more than a sequence of keystrokes. This
means that you should be able to duplicate with a barcode anything that can
be done with a keyboard. In the Vantage Data Collection screen you can move
between the Job, Asm, and Operation fields using the enter key. On many
barcode readers I've used in the past the code for the Enter key is $M.
So, let's say you're in Crystal and trying to build a single bar code to
accomplish your task. The field in Crystal should read something like this:
* + Jobnum + $M + Assm + $M + Operation + $M + * (Most readers require 3
of 9 barcodes to start and end with an *)
Where this will get tricky for you is that we use formulas instead of
straight names to print the three separate barcodes. These formulas are
used in conjunction with the "Print Barcode?" check box from the print
traveler screen. In your case, if you always print the barcodes, then you
could replace the current three barcodes with one field structured as I've
laid out above.
There are a number of variables here (what code, how long of code can your
reader read, etc), but once you find out what the code for Enter is on your
readers, the rest should fall into place.
Good luck,

Unfortunately, while this would work in theory, the reality is that Vantage
responds with message boxes to many of these data collection entries when
certain conditions are triggered. If you have a message pop up in response
to your job number entry, for example, it will kill the train of entries for
the assembly and operation. We eventually had to have a custom modification
of the data entry application made to permit this kind of one click entry of
concatenated bar code information from our travelers, and to accomodate some
other streamlining we required. It's working well and has greatly helped the
adoption of real-time data collection. We used Caesar Development for this
project.

John,
I have tried this and it doesn't seem to work. By embedding the tab
characters it just places tabs between the fields on the barcode. From what
I have read is that this is beyond the realm of the Code 39 bar code. I
spoke with computerwise (makers of the TT5) and they said I would need an
extended 3of9 bar code to do this. Perhaps a Code 128 barcode would do it
since it supports the full ASCII characters. Does Vantage have a Code 128
font available?
Someone also mentioned the fact that the EMfg data collection program
prompts would interfere with this "one scan concept". Is this true and are
you considering this as a change to the system?
Thanks

I'm working on a similar project. How do you put a carriage return or tab
in the crystal report formula. I've tried
"*"+{joboper.JOBNUM}+"$M"+{joboper.ASMSEQ}+"$M"+{joboper.OPRSEQ}+"*"
and "*"+{joboper.JOBNUM}+"^M"+{joboper.ASMSEQ}+"^M"+{joboper.OPRSEQ}+"*"
but without success. Any ideas!

Try CHR(x) where x is the ascii value of the character you want. CR is
13, TAB is 10.

Wayne,
I tried multiple characters to embed either tab or enter and it simply
represents those when it prints out the barcode. Is that what it suppose to
do? For example:
'*' + {jobasmbl.JOBNUM} + chr(13) + {jobasmbl.ASMSEQ} + chr(13) +
{joboper.OPRSEQ} + '*'
Prints the bar code like this:
*JOBNUM
ASMSEQ
OPRSEQ*
Any idea?

Doh! I got to thinking after I hit send that that was bad advice. Even
*if* your bar code scheme has a way to represent control characters,
Crystal is probably going to intercept them first.
I think what you probably need is a special character sequence that your
scanner will recognize, and translate into the desired keyboard input. You
may have been closer with your original example; seems like I've seen
similar things suggested here. Have you checked your scanner's
documentation for anything like that?

Some of what you are trying might depend on the scanner you are using. For
my Welch-Allyn scanners there is a "full ASCII" scanning mode for Code 39
that interprets special pairs of characters in the barcode as a single
control character. For instance $M would be translated by the scanner as a
CR character without triggering Crystal into "seeing" a carriage return.
Check your scanner manual for the proper code (if available) and the means
to set the scanner to Full ASCII mode.

ASMSEQ
OPRSEQ*
Any idea?

I think the character combo that Symbol uses is <esc>0 (escape zero) for the
Enter key and it has to be the last thing in the barcode. [....data...] +
CHR(59) + '0' This is just a guess but I have seen other systems use
escape to trigger special characters.

The scanner I have is a WASP and uses a preamble/postamble. Has anyone had
experience with the use of this type of setup/scanner?
My biggest concern is if these codes vary from one scanner to the next, how
do you create a barcode that will work with different scanners? My
situation is this: I have a TT5 with a badge reader built-in and the WASP
scanner so if the character string to tab/enter is different what do I do to
insure that the barcode is readable on each?

Darren not sure if this will work for your carriage return problem. First I
created this formula carriage return StringToCode39 (CHR(13)) and then
inserted it where you use chr(13). I am trying to create employee badges
and want to embed the ALT S key to select employee is there an ASCII code
for the ALT key?

Wayne,
I tried multiple characters to embed either tab or enter and it simply
represents those when it prints out the barcode. Is that what it suppose to
do? For example:
'*' + {jobasmbl.JOBNUM} + chr(13) + {jobasmbl.ASMSEQ} + chr(13) +
{joboper.OPRSEQ} + '*'
Prints the bar code like this:
*JOBNUM
ASMSEQ
OPRSEQ*
Any idea?

I checked the Symbol web site and in the knowledgebase it seems to indicate
it has to be the last thing in the barcode. IF this is even the right
technique for your scanner. Personally I would still have grave doubts
about trying to string multiple fields together in one bar code for any
scanner due to confusion it might cause the operator if an error message
were to occur in any field but the last. Closed job, previous oper not
completed, etc.... would invalidate the whole barcode and they would have to
manually enter fields form the error field onward. I'd rather my users
stopped to consider all messages.
BTW - Someone asked about ALT - it other ASCII characters (or sequences) can
be referenced at:
www.asciitable.com <
http://www.asciitable.com>
You may you be able to simulate the ALT key-down and ALT key-up on each side
of the desired character (such as S) by using the ANSI character codes for
ETX and EOT (03 and O4 respectively). So I believe that ALT-S could be
created as a character field with the value CHR(03) + 'S' + CHR(04). This
too may be scanner specific.
