Barcode generation for Kit products

Is anyone using barcodes on manufactured items (KITS)? I’m thinking we should be tying them to order number line number. We are a sizeable prehung door manufacturer and are trying to barcode our inventory, scanning it at the loading dock as it gets loaded. Any comments appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Kelly,

We use OrderNum OrderLine OrderRel for our barcodes, but everything we make is custom and made to order, meaning we have no inventory and no cancelled orders. If you are selling a more generic item that could be sold to other customers, I think there would be better ways to do it that don’t tie items to a certain order in case of the order being cancelled and the stock being sold to a different customer. Mileage may vary with our method.

Yes same all of our door units are made to order. Are you manually generating barcodes? Or is the system generating the bar code off of the info you listed in your response?

System generated! They are generated in SSRS reports. Our reports (I think primarily cut lists) have a textbox that consists of that information where we have changed the font to be a barcode (the font in particular that we use is “DataWorks Bar 39”) - the only shortcoming of this is that since it is a font and not some sort of embedded image, any computer that runs/prints the reports the barcode is on needs to have the font installed.

You may already have DWBAR 39 if you have had Epicor since Vantage - I think it came with it back then. Not sure about now. Any barcode font should work, however, so long as your scanners can read it.
