Barcodes-symbols

Ann,

I have setup Symbol scanners in Vantage. These are the characters
reserved for special functions: % $ ! @ # ^ & ( ) = { } | \ : ; " '

I don't have much experience with barcodes, but have been able to
create a few labels I need.

A particular field that is barcoded on my label is the PONum.
Everything reads fine - except if they use spaces, slashes, and
sometimes dashes. What I mean be sometimes dashes, the dashes seem
to read OK on the PartNum field, but for some reason it won't read
on the PONum field for my current project. These are formulas that
Calvin helped me with eons ago, I've just used his formulas/formats,
according to if it is a value or character, and changed fields in
the formula as needed.

When cust service creates an order for an RGR, they use the PONum,
space, slash, original order number and line number, ie:
p213695 /019220-11. Just recently became a problem since we have to
attach a barcode label to all parts to a particular customer.

Just to check, I ran the label with just the PONum p213695, reads
fine. The ones I tried that it will not read is p213695 /019220-11,
p213695/019220-11, p213695-019220-11.

Does anyone know what characters and symbols are not going to be
readable on a barcode, or if there is something I need to be aware
of in the formula or format: Dataworks bar39, size 20, "*K" + STRING
(PONum) + "*"

Thanks much!
(Also, Thank you to Shirley Graver & Michael Podlin and all others
for your recent help!!)

Along these same lines, I need to create a special bar coded parts
list. I am on 5.1 and it has been awhile since I used Report
Builder. I created the bar code with the * at the beginning and end
but what is the exact command to eliminate the spaces within the
part. Our parts can contain space(s). I tried the trim command but
I'm not doing something right as the bar coded part still shows the
spaces and thus cannot be read. If someone could tell me the exact
command to trim the spaces from the part.partnumber I would really
appreciate it. TIA.

The "Space" is represented by a comma. For example to create a bar code
for "abcdef 111" you would use "*abcdef,111*"
In Report Builder I think you need to use the Replace Function to
replace spaces with commas (It's been a while so I don't remember the
exact command).

Also here is a Keyboard Equivalent Chart that may be of some use:

Key Board Key Bar Code Equivalent
F1 $A
F2 $B
F3 $C
F4 $D
F5 $E
F6 $F
F7 $G
TAB $I
PAGE UP $K
PAGE DOWN $L
ENTER $M
F8 $N
F9 $O
F10 $P
DEL $Q
INSERT $R
LEFT ARROW $S
RIGHT ARROW $T
DOWN ARROW $U
UP ARROW $V
HOME $W
END $X
SHIFT ON $Y
SHIFT OFF $Z
ESC %A
CTRL ON %B
CTRL OFF %C
ALT ON %D
ALT OFF %E
; %F
< %G

> %I
? %J
[ %K

! /A
" /B
# /C
$ /D
% /E
& /F
' /G
( /H

* /J
+ /K

/ /O

Hope this is of some help.
