Barcoding questions

Ann,

It attaches just like any network node. You will want it in the general
proximity of your wireless users to maximize signal strength.

Great info from you and Michael Barry - Thank you!

By Pocket PC, are you referring to a palm pilot, blackberry, or what? I
would love to know what you use, or what you would use.

Access Point - where does it connect to my network?

Thanks,
Ann

We currently are on 5.0, hope to upgrade to 6.1 as soon as a new
application server is setup. We are a mfg job shop with cat 6
throughout, and fiber between the office and shop switch (in a
cabinet). We have 10 data collection workstations. We have 1
barcoding newer workstation setup in the shipping area, with wired
ethernet connection. This workstation is currently running an Access
barcode program separate from Vantage that was brought in by a new
mother company. I want to be able to phase in Vantage barcoding so we
can phase out the Access program.

The barcode workstation mentioned above has an electronic scale
attached and could run Vantage barcode, it's just never been set up.
We recently purchased a thermal printer and the mother company brought
in barcode wedges. The thing that they like about the Access program
is that you can use a wireless hand held scanner that collects
information at the racks that can be downloaded to Access. I
understand that cannot be done in Vantage because it is 'live'. I am
looking for the next best thing. I am looking for something portable
that can go up to the top shelf of the rack with the warehouse person
for cycle counts or physical inventories, and something that can
attach to a towmotor for material movers. It needs to be fairly
simple to work with. One of Calvin's ideas was to hook up a cig
lighter to the towmotor to power the device.

I searched egroups and got lots of good info. Please share your
stories, and I am hoping to hear specific brands and models please so
I can learn more about wireless points and how they connect, tablet
PC's, notebooks, specs necessary to make it all work, ease of use,
wireless concerns and cards needed, associated costs to expect, what
to watch for (ie. a/b/g?).

Thanks much!
Ann
Ann,

There is a company that makes "brick" PC's that could be mounted to the
towmotor and, piggybacking on Calvin's idea, powered from the DC connection.
Here's there URL:

http://www.ergo-computing.com

In practice, this system would allow your inventory maintenance to be
performed on the live Vantage system with standard barcode readers over a
wireless connection.

That being said, setting up a WiFi access point may cause you some
Sarbanes-Oxley issues if you are publicly held. You should take a serious
look at a real WiFi firewall in any event just to make sure that your system
is adequately protected. Here's a good example:

http://www.fortinet.com/products/telesoho.html

Check out the FortiWiFi 60 as an example of the type of security appliance
that you might want to consider.

Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Michael

Hey Ann -

How about this :

Install an XP Pro workstation with the Vantage client running Remote
Desktop. Remote desktop can be setup to accept web based access as well as
from the RDP client - your pick.

Install a wireless AP.

Use a Pocket PC with the builtin scanner and WiFi and the RDP client or IE
(again your pick).
(Check Symbol Technologies for their scanner product line)

The user walks around the plant scanning everything in sight and it goes
directly into Vantage via the xp workstation.

my 0010 bits,

Charles
