Bartender Software with Vantage

I am in the process of testing Bartender with Vantage. I still
cannot figure out where on the Vantage menu or where in MES to use
any of the 6 Epicor-provided Bartender files.

Is anyone using those files? Can you give me the Vantage menu path
to try them?

I see them in Data Definitions and I see them in Report Styles, but I
cannot find any Vantage 8.03.404 menu option which uses them.

GenInv
GenJob
GenQA
GenRcpt
GenShip
GenSO

Thanks.

Lynn

As a recent [happy] ex-employee of Epicor's Advanced Solutions Group,
Barcoding/Labeling/Bartender, etc was one of my fortes.

You don't need BarTender to print labels in Code39 format. Crystal
works just fine and you can automate with BAMs and AutoPrint's, too.

BarTender can only be used in limitation inside Vantage. Everyone here
with an install of Vantage already has the Report Data Definitions used
for BarTender... There's only 6. Check them out: GenInv, GenJob, GenQA,
GenRcpt, GenShip, GenSO. That's it. As long as you are OK with
Code39, you can do this easily with Crystal Reports.

BarTender is clunky to set up, manage and troubleshoot (for the average
IT person) and is over sold and over pushed to customers.

Support is horrible and very limited.

Epicor will want to sell you 2 or 3 days of on-site consulting for this.
So calculate that into your purchase price (don't forget airfare, hotel,
car, expenses, perdiem, etc.). Otherwise you are on your own and it
could take you a week or two to hack through the install.. if not more.

You can buy BarTender from anywhere, but Epicor's price really isn't
bad.

Stick with Zebra printers. Intermec and SATO are compatible, but
Zebra's are good and reliable.

Be careful with promises made with the wireless handheld barcode
scanners such as the Intermec MC9090's. The Handheld UI is very clunky
and limited as far as customizing.

Consider using PioneerPOS touchscreens running MES and using tethered
Symbol LS2208 barcode scanners instead of the Vantage Handheld UI.

Also, why do you believe you need AMM? Will you be using the
Fulfillment Workbench?

Good luck.

As related before...we bought BarTender thinking it would neatly integrate
to Vantage (on SQL)......not so.

Every label needs a special setup and of course, it's nothing easy to get
your head around. Dan Pringle is the Epicor Consultant handling that part
of the business.

After we bought BarTender and saw how difficult it was to integrate to
Vantage we abandoned that strategy and simply use it as if it were any
other web deployed product.

Also, BarTender's claims about ODBC connection to the Db are very
overblown...not all that easy: we abandoned that strategy also.

We were not happy with BarTender's pricing policy...you buy printer-seats.

In retrospect we should have just gone with a cheap WYSIWYG label program
with an unlimited liscence.

Just an FYI, We also bought AMM to get the handheld capability...total
waste of money on the handhelds. You really don't get a lot of capability.

We invested in a DELL tablet PC and get far better use out of that...our
materials manager carries it always and works wirelessly at our 2
plants. The non-touch stylus was tricky and we have yet to put the
pen-barcode reader onto it but the technology has worked out far better
than the limited functionality of the handhelds.

Victor raises another caution about the handhelds.....they require a
Terminal Sever Session. We were already up against the ceiling on our TS
licences and we had a choice to cut some other application sessions or not
do handhelds. The additional costs of the licences was not worth it.

Agreed on the Zebra Printer...Also, Zebra Pro bar code software is the way
we should have gone instead of BarTender.

As a counter to the handhelds, we love our handhelds here.

The customization isn't that big of a problem, we've customized a half
dozen screens, the same as any other customizations in the system. The
one limitation I haven't found away around is we can't change the main
menu structure.

Otherwise our users love them, IT loves them, they work very well. We
are using Symbol's.

The main menu is a little limiting for customization

As a note you can change the name of the menu items by modifying the xml
in the res folder of the client.

You can customize the screens to do what ever you like, but sometimes
you have to

Set the forms location else customized forms open in the wrong position
and

On the handheld you cannot see them.

Regarding bartender, its integration into Vantage / Vista is ok,

You can always via BPM or BAM create the .bt files

Consisting of the data and commands to control

Bartender commander and this is much more flexible than

utilizing the auto print framework which doesn't support all scenarios.

Stephen

Hello:

I see the Epicor-provided 6 Gen* data definitions and the 6 Gen*
Report Styles and the 6 .btw files.

I want to begin using Bartender to create product and material
labels; but I cannot figure out where to print them from.

The only places I have found so far are MES-ReportQuantity and MES-
ReceiptEntry.

We will need to sometimes print labels to label and re-label
containers of material prior to Jobs Starting and in process. Is
there a place in Vantage where you can get a label on demand without
having to do a transaction? Or will I need to resort to ODBC?

We have not yet gone live on all modules. Some additional modules
are going live on 12/2; and the remaining are going live on 1/1. I
need to have some sort of container labeling method in place by 12/2.

Can anyone tell me where in the Vantage menu I can find places to use
and test Bartender labels?

Lynn

Print them from a button using VB. Here is an example, I actualy
pass the lotnumber("TagNumber") as a parameter into it to print a
specific label. If you use the help in will explain the inputs.
You just need to do process.start() and put in the parameters

Private Sub btnOk_Click(ByVal Sender As Object, ByVal Args As
System.EventArgs) Handles btnOk.Click
Dim Printer As String = UDTagsForm.Session.UserID
Dim UDTags As EpiDataView = Ctype(oTrans.EPiDataViews
("UDTags"),EpiDataView)
Dim TagNumber As String = UDTags.dataView(UDTags.Row)("Key1")
Dim strPath As String = "C:\Progra~1\Seagull\BarTender\8.0
\bartend.exe"
Dim strParam As String = "/F=C:\Tags.btw /PRN= /P /X /?
TagNumber="&TagNumber
Dim strParam2 As String = strParam.Insert(20,Printer)
Process.Start(strPath, strParam2)
End Sub

Dear Michael:

Thanks for your response. I think that I understand and I am trying
your example. I chose a blank button in my customized MES, removed
the EpiBinding, labeled it 'Print Tags', then I pasted your code
into the script editor.

Is this correct so far?

Would you be willing to send me a copy of your Tags.btw file so that
I can test the customization?

My email address is lynn.khalife@...

I only installed the Trial Bartender 2 days ago and I am still trying
to figure out how to get it to do what I need.

Thanks.

Lynn,

Are you using Code39 or Code128?

If you are using Code39 (standard on Vantage Travelers, etc) then scrap
BarTender and use Crystal Reports.

Bartender is a convoluted PITA and you are limited to those 6 or so
label types and system triggers.

I used to install Bartender for Epicor customers... So much work and
linkage to get it installed when the same thing can be accomplished with
Crystal Reports pending you are using Code39.

My file will not work for you. My tag is based of UD01, this
customization passes a UD01 record to bartender that then links to
the job and order to put customer name and job details as well
as "tag" number on the label. Everytime they report a quantity it
creates a sequential number and creates UD01 record for that
quantity with job details. What info are you looking for on your
label?

I have tried many times to find ways to get Crystal Reports to work
for me. It has too many limitations.

1. I have one customer who requires 2 fields to be concatenated into
1 field with spacebars in the middle. This is a very easy Crystal
formula to write. Problem is that the Crystal Bar39 font will not
properly code a spacebar. The barcode simply has a gap where the
spacebar character should have been coded and it will not scan. I
tried every suggestion I could gather from other users to overcome
this one.

2. We print labels for hundreds of product cartons (injection molded
plastic parts) every day. Each of these cartons need to have a
unique Trace number on them. Currently we use Label Matrix to print
these labels. I use a counter as part of the unique Trace Number.
Frequently, when a job increases, we need to go back and print
additional labels. At that time, we need to start the counter at the
number we left off at so that we don't get any duplicate trace
numbers. I tried using RunningTotal, PageNumber, and RecordNumber.
No matter what, I could not figure out a way to pass a parameter to a
counter in Crystal to get it to start at number 63 or 78 instead of
number 1.

3. About half of our customers require that each box have the unique
trace number printed on the label AND that each box have 2 copies of
that label -- one on each end of the box. Crystal is not able to
print "duplicates" while also printing unique labels for many
boxes. It would work only if we printed 1 label at a time. We print
hundreds, maybe thousands, of labels a day. We need these features
automated as much as possible.

4. We have a couple of customers who do require Code 128.

These are medical and automotive customers. They are sticklers about
their labeling standards.

I would have much preferred to use Crystal, but I just can't get it
to do all the things that I have been doing for years with the Label
Matrix barcode label software.

I appreciate any and all input. I am constantly searching old
messages from the group to find tried and true methods.

Thanks very much for your response to my cry for help.

That's OK. Right now, the data on a label is not important. Right
now, I am just trying to figure out how to get Bartender to work in
Vantage.

I deleted the reference to TagNumber from the code you supplied and I
replaced Tags.btw with the Epicor-provided InventoryLabel.btw. My
code is bad. It doesn't even compile. I just don't know how to use
it. I searched Epicor's website for info on Bartender. There are no
instructions.

Right now, I think that I have no choice but to use ODBC to connect
Bartender to the Vantage/Progress database in order to get container
labels any time we need them. That's the direction I am heading now.

Since your code was calling out a strPath, this is what you are doing
with your button in MES anyway, right? Does your file Tags.btw use
an ODBC connection string?

Thanks.

Lynn

Yes my tag file is set up with for ODBC.
If you don't want to connect to you DB then you have another option.
Just set bartender and your label up to watch for a text file.
Bartender will monitor the folder you specify and then print. You
will have to create the text file using code in Vantage script
editor. I was told you cannot use any activeX within vantage, but
bartender does allow for integration that way. If anyone figures
out how that works please let me know.
