Black background on Crystal Forms

I had this same problem with a new Lanier Copier/Printer that we just
got. I figured out that that the colored fill on the box surrounding
the last page header on our PO form was "bleeding" down through lines
below and would print as black. I just unchecked the "Fill" box on
the border and it printed fine.

What printer/printer driver? Crystal is "tested out" with older drivers for a handful of common printers. Sometimes there are memory issues in interpreting what is being sent ot the printer and it fills areas or omits items. Some people install the same printer on a PC with an older driver and call it "<printer name>-FORMS" and use that for just forms printing due to this type of issue. Another similar factor is (with HP lasers anyway) PCL6 versus PCL5 and I think XP defaults to PCL6 driver. I've had issues with that too.

It's a HP4050 and the PLC6 driver. I was using PLC6 before. I guess I'll
have to punt with the older driver.

Try the latest PCL-5 driver. The PCL-6 drivers have always been flaky
IMO. Apparently someone at HP agrees, since they're still offering 5 AND 6
after all these years.
