Business without barriers user summit

I'm going. Yes, it will be a sales pitch...both for potential new sites as well as a push to upgrade. I can deal with that for the sake of getting a bit more feel for the differences from 6.1. We plan to skip 8 altogether and reimplement with a new database...importing some legacy data (like customers, vendors and part info) via Service Connect or custom import. So any info about 9 and this route will help the long range planning. Actually if I can get a couple key non-technical people here to also go it would be a lot more worthwhile for them to actually see 9 then for me alone. But it will also give me a chance to talk to some local users about business climate and their opinions about 9. A mini-Perspectives sort of.

We received a flier from Epicor on the Business without barriers user
summit. Is anyone going to this? Is this just a sales pitch for Epicor 9?
Will I learn something there? Any thoughts on this?

Charle,

Look in the system monitor and see if the global alert is stuck in the

Check your System Agent...System Management-Utilities-System Agent.
Your global alerts should be listed underneath schedules. Make sure the
schedule that you attached your global alerts to is configured
correctly. In your Progress Explorer Tool restart your Process Server
and Task Agent appservers. Check and see if the global alerts are
working now.

Here are the instructions for setting up Global Alerts. Verify that all of these components are setup correctly. Make sure that your scheduled startup is enabled and that your mail server allows relaying.

1. From the main menu, select System Management->Company Configuration->Company->Email.

In the Email Link Port field, enter an unused port number. This port will be used by the product when sending a global alert with an attachment. When the user receiving the alert clicks on the attachment, the product will be "listening" on this port to retrieve the correct data in a tracker related to the alert if the user has a session of the product open when the alert's attachment is double-clicked.

In the Global Alert Email Address From and Label fields, enter the email address and label enter the default email address and label that global alerts will be created with whenever an alert is sent.

In the SMTP section of the screen, enter your mail server and its related port number.

2. Make sure you have a startup process to schedule your global alerts. To do this, go to your System Agent (System Management -> Utilities -> System Agent), do a search and open up your System Agent. Expand the tree on the left until you get to schedules, if you have a start up schedule already skip the next paragraph. If not, do a File-> New Schedule, leave the schedule number blank, give it a Description of Startup, make sure the Enabled checkbox is checked, and make sure schedule type is Start Up.

3. Next, go to System Management -> Utilities -> Global Alerts Email Server Process. Select the newly created startup schedule from the pull down menu, check continuous and reoccurring, press submit.

4. You have now attached the process to a startup schedule. This will cause the global alerts process to run as long as the ProcessServer and TaskAgent are running. To make this active, restart your ProcessServer and TaskAgent for the database you are in from the Progress Explorer Tool. This will not kick people out of Vantage and can be done at any time. Do not stop the main (top) appserver though; that will kick people out of Vantage.

5. You will now see a GlobalAlertsEmail.log file in your mfgwrk80 directory. You can check this log file to see that emails are sending and if they are not what possible issues you could be encountering. (The error messages are outputted here).

Possible errors:
SMTP code 0: Either the SMTP server is setup wrong in your company configuration (System Management -> Company -> email tab) or there is something blocking communication. For example, many virus solutions will block traffic on port 25, assuming that it is spam. To check your smtp server, you can do a "telnet smtpservername 25" from a command prompt. This should connect you to the SMTP server, type "helo" and press enter and see if you get a response.

550 Relaying not allowed: This is a very common issue. Since Vantage sends out the mail without any authentication most mail servers will not allow the mail to be sent. You have to tell your mail server to allow relaying. Most mail servers will let you allow relaying from a particular host; in this case make it your Vantage server.

Subject: [Vantage] Re: Global Alerts are not sending

Here are the instructions for setting up Global Alerts. Verify that all
of these components are setup correctly. Make sure that your scheduled
startup is enabled and that your mail server allows relaying.

1. From the main menu, select System Management->Company
Configuration->Company->Email.

In the Email Link Port field, enter an unused port number. This port
will be used by the product when sending a global alert with an
attachment. When the user receiving the alert clicks on the attachment,
the product will be "listening" on this port to retrieve the correct
data in a tracker related to the alert if the user has a session of the
product open when the alert's attachment is double-clicked.

In the Global Alert Email Address From and Label fields, enter the email
address and label enter the default email address and label that global
alerts will be created with whenever an alert is sent.

In the SMTP section of the screen, enter your mail server and its
related port number.

2. Make sure you have a startup process to schedule your global alerts.
To do this, go to your System Agent (System Management -> Utilities ->
System Agent), do a search and open up your System Agent. Expand the
tree on the left until you get to schedules, if you have a start up
schedule already skip the next paragraph. If not, do a File-> New
Schedule, leave the schedule number blank, give it a Description of
Startup, make sure the Enabled checkbox is checked, and make sure
schedule type is Start Up.

3. Next, go to System Management -> Utilities -> Global Alerts Email
Server Process. Select the newly created startup schedule from the pull
down menu, check continuous and reoccurring, press submit.

4. You have now attached the process to a startup schedule. This will
cause the global alerts process to run as long as the ProcessServer and
TaskAgent are running. To make this active, restart your ProcessServer
and TaskAgent for the database you are in from the Progress Explorer
Tool. This will not kick people out of Vantage and can be done at any
time. Do not stop the main (top) appserver though; that will kick people
out of Vantage.

5. You will now see a GlobalAlertsEmail.log file in your mfgwrk80
directory. You can check this log file to see that emails are sending
and if they are not what possible issues you could be encountering. (The
error messages are outputted here).

Possible errors:
SMTP code 0: Either the SMTP server is setup wrong in your company
configuration (System Management -> Company -> email tab) or there is
something blocking communication. For example, many virus solutions will
block traffic on port 25, assuming that it is spam. To check your smtp
server, you can do a "telnet smtpservername 25" from a command prompt.
This should connect you to the SMTP server, type "helo" and press enter
and see if you get a response.

550 Relaying not allowed: This is a very common issue. Since Vantage
sends out the mail without any authentication most mail servers will not
allow the mail to be sent. You have to tell your mail server to allow
relaying. Most mail servers will let you allow relaying from a
particular host; in this case make it your Vantage server.

Yes. That is normal. You actually configure how often you want your
Global Alerts Email Task to trigger at System Management - Utilities -
Global Alerts/Email Server Process... When you submit the process it
asks for the value for the "Continuous Process Delay". Ours is set to 1
minute. Even though your "Start Up Task Schedule" is set to "start up"
on the System Agent your Global Email Alerts will still run every minute
or however long you have them set. Does this make sense?

Thanks,

Blake Clemens

Do you mean the Task Agent Appserver in your progress explorer tool or
your system agent in Vantage?

We received a flier from Epicor on the Business without barriers user
summit. Is anyone going to this? Is this just a sales pitch for Epicor 9?
Will I learn something there? Any thoughts on this?
