I just upgraded HD and RAM on a bunch of P233 and P333 celerons for Vantage
and gen office WS's. Work great. Don't need a speed demon CPU for a
Vantage ws.

I would venture to say that based on microsofts development methodology,
which seems to be to save the user and the developer time, at the expense of
increased hardware requirements, it is best to get a processor that will
account future software upgrades (look at the vantage for progress CPU
requirements versus vantage for progress/SQL). If you are looking to cut
CPU cost while still purchasing systems that will perform well now, and
handle the next OS upgrade or two, check out

In the desktop market, AMD is a better buy than a Pentium or Celeron.
Unless you want to sacrifice performance for the sake of getting a chip that
says "Intel" on it.
Of course, as mentioned, the CPU speed is not really the determining factor
with vantage if you are running at least 5-600 mhz. I would say that not
enough RAM and slow hard drives are the main performance bottlenecks on our
non-CAD workstations. Doubling the processor speed on these machines would
be like doubling your engine size before fixing a stuck e-brake.

All of the machines we have purchased recently have been celerons. They work
great just as well as equivalent PIII's for Vantage and everything else
except heavy number crunching (in our case, AutoCAD).
