Changing Product Group Sales Site

When we create sales orders, the SO release always defaults to a specific site, which is the product groups sales site.

Deleting the sales site on the product group causes the release on a new SO to default to the site the user is logged into.

Recently, we had an issue where a SO was not showing in Time Phase for a specific part. After some quick digging, I found this SO showing in Time Phase in the original site the SO release defaulted to, and it stayed there, even after changing the site on the release during initial creation. We ended up short shipping an order because of this.

We are looking into removing the sales site on all product groups so that new orders default to the site the user is logged into, perhaps even using shortcuts that open SO entry in each site.

We are a bit concerned that this change will have unwanted impact somewhere else. Has anyone else changed this and found any kind of unwanted impact?

This is a complicated question, since what may be “unwanted” by one environment might be completely acceptable, possibly even desirable, in another.

In your case, if the actual question is “why isn’t Time Phase being updated when I change the site value on a Sales Order Release?”, we might be able to find a simpler solution (it might be a bug, you might want to run MRP in Net Change mode, etc.) that doesn’t require you to explore changing a process that otherwise gives you information you need.

Thanks for your response, you have good points. We run MRP daily - and even ran MRP (net change and regen) when first finding that SO wasn’t showing in the desired site, it didn’t help with our issue. We ended up having to unfirm and refirm the release to get it to knock over to desired site in Time Phase.

My main concern is some sort of accounting impact deleting sales site on product group might cause.

I suppose the better question to ask is - what else could this change impact?

Product Groups are used to classify sales for GL and reporting purposes. A Product Group on a Sales Order does not affect the GL until shipment, so there SHOULD not be any direct GL impact of deleting Sales Sites from Product Groups.

The indirect (non-GL level) impacts would likely come in any reporting you do that uses the Order Release Site value PRIOR to shipment for planning/reporting/what-all-else-have-you purposes that now may show data differently and may need to be updated or looked at differently.

I strongly recommend testing this out in your TEST environment so you can see the downstream effects, if any.
