Changing sales order line with existing firm job

Question 1:

A sales order has firmed but not released job, what is the cleanest way to make a part change to the sales order line and ensure the job reflects the change.

  1. Delete the existing firm demand and job and let MRP create a new unfirm job?

  2. Change the part on the job to match the changed sales order line part before MRP runs and will it see demand is covered by changed job?

Question 2:

On a firm job, what does deleting just the demand and leaving the job do as opposed to deleting both?

Question 3:

If this sales order line part is swapped with an existing firmed job and I’m not made aware to handle, where does the now orphaned job go? Planning workbench as a CHG suggestion or cancel suggestion?

We have our PMs routinely swapping parts on a sales order lines that already have a firmed job so I wanted to know the best way to handle.

Question 1 = #1 is the best. #2 will work
Question 2 = bad shit. Don’t do this. It will be an orphaned job that will just exist but not go anywhere with 0 quantity. Make a test job for a part to stock, then delete the demand link and look in time phase to see what I’m talking about.
Question 3 = There should be a cancel suggestion in planning workbench. I think MRP would make a new unfirm job but it might not since there is already an open job to that SO line so you would have to test that.

IMHO changing a SO line should be the same process as writing a new line, so it would start from scratch and let the system do what it’s supposed to do. If it’s going to keep happening then it’s probably worth writing a BPM/Function to either delete the existing job so MRP can regen a new unfirm job, or changing the part num, demand link, and qtys to match the SO change.
