# Changing the useful life of a fixed asset **Category:** [Epicor ERP 9](https://www.epiusers.help/c/e9/7) **Created:** 2017-01-25 16:51 UTC **Views:** 2846 **Replies:** 5 **URL:** https://www.epiusers.help/t/changing-the-useful-life-of-a-fixed-asset/37016 --- ## Post #1 by @Rowley150 **Epicor version 9.05.701** Is it possible to change the useful life of an asset?....in the example below you can see it is 15 years, how could i make it 10 years? Many thanks in advance. --- ## Post #2 by @aidacra You should be able to uncheck the Depreciate checkbox in the Depreciation section of this screen. Then, you should be able to enter the new amount of years for useful life. Recheck the depreciate checkbox and save it. --- ## Post #3 by @Rowley150 Sadly when you uncheck it the years remain greyed out. --- ## Post #4 by @aidacra On the Asset > Detail tab, when does it say that this asset was placed in service? If it was placed in service more than 15 years ago, that would tell me (who, in the interest of full disclosure, thinks that most financial issues can be addressed with a one-sided journal entry) that it is already fully depreciated and if that is the case, there isn't a way to change the useful life (there is an open enhancement for that). A new asset would have to be created in that situation with the new useful life. If it wasn't place in service more than 15 years ago, then, I'm 100% confident that one of our support resources on the financial side would be able to help as I am relying on some notes I took from an onboarding financial support class from 8 years ago when E904 was still bleeding edge :| --- ## Post #5 by @Rowley150 Hi Nathan, Thanks for the reply. Here is a screenshot of the placed in service date. The second screenshot shows the useful life field still greyed out even when the "depreciate" tickbox is cleared. --- ## Post #6 by @Rowley150 One other idea i came up with is to 1) dispose the fixed asset 2) put the asset on again but correctly 3) review the double entry in the TB but this method seems like overkill for something that should just be able to be modified. --- **Canonical:** https://www.epiusers.help/t/changing-the-useful-life-of-a-fixed-asset/37016 **Original content:** https://www.epiusers.help/t/changing-the-useful-life-of-a-fixed-asset/37016
