Changing User IDs in V8.0

We started our employee ID's at 100 for that very reason, it gives you
900 employees, and they sort properly, if that's not going to be enough,
I guess you could start at 1000 instead.

Can't help much on the bulk change of existing records...and I suspect
it is not worth the hassle to do that anyway. But as a heads-up if you
change to numeric codes be sure they are uniform in length AND if needed
have leading zeros. The field, as you know, is alphanumeric, and is left
justified rather than right, like numbers. So sorting on reports by ID
becomes very strange without the leading zeros.

If assigning new numbers you would have to inactivate the old ID's and
re-enter the employee info. There may be a way to use a scripting
program (like GroundControl) to automate this if the number of employees
is really large.

I'm looking for a way to change some of my shop employees' user IDs.
When we first installed Vantage 5 years ago, we created IDs containing
the user's first initial and last name. As many of you may know this
can be tiresome for shop employees who need to log on and off
frequently. I would like to change their IDs to numbers. Has anyone
found an easy way to do this?

You can ODBC with an update query, but I wouldn't advise it.

The table that the User ID is called "PUB.UserFile", the field name is
"DcdUserID"

However, the UserFile table is linked to 55 other tables and 54 of them
are linked on the DcdUserID field, so by-passing the application logic
could get a little hairy.

Why not create shop employee barcodes and attach a handheld barcode scanner
to the PC. Then the shop employee just has to scan there barcode to enter
there ID.
