Character fields used in VB forms

Unless otherwise specifically stated (progress, crystal...) you will
find we always refer to Epicor support.

Which Tech Support? Epicor or Crystal?

Thanks for the fast response!

After implementing several VB forms, we have just discovered the
ugly "gotcha" in Crystal when you use character01 (character02,
etc.) fields. They are defined as memo fields (>255 characters) and
therefore are not sortable or available for use with formulas. You
can print them but nothing else...

CR's KnowledgeBase for 8.5 article #c20009954 provides a generic
solution of how to truncate the field so that it can be sorted
and/or used in formulas. (Email me if you would like a copy of this
article sent to you.) This issue is supposedly resolved in CR 9 and
I would imagine also in CR 10 but that fact is not terribly useful
to me until we migrate to Sonoma.

Has anyone out there already done this? If so, what were the
results? If not, do you have any other workarounds to offer?
I have Sales and Marketing screaming about their report which can no
longer be sorted in the way they need them to be...
We have truncated several fields to be used in Crystal formulas. The
process works great, and only affects ODBC data, the actual field is not
changed. The ODBC connection acts as if this is a (x)255 field, and
only grabs that much data.
No problems to report as of yet. I have been using truncated fields for
several years and several versions of Vantage.
If I remember correctly, the only catch is that you need to have
everyone out and restart the DB after.
Good luck,

I agree with Aaron. It's easy and painless, just get the
instructions from Tech Support.
