Check printing and printer selection

My solution to the problem was to switch to laser printed checks.
Our check format did not even require editing. The laser forms are
actually less expensive than the continuous forms. Our file copy of
the check (which could be eliminated if we wanted to go more
paperless) is simply printing the check batch a second time on plain
paper. My A/P clerk loves it that she no longer has to align the
check on the printer, and the are far fewer (none) problems with
paper jams and misfeeds.

I'm having a problem printing checks when switching between an HP Laser
(printing check edit lists, and other print jobs), and an Okidata dot matrix
(to print checks). I get no errors, and the print job is sent to the
printer, shows up in the queue, but disappears without printing anything.

Epicor says this is a known problem, and I should make the default printer
the Oki, but that doesn't solve the problem. HP and Oki are networked
printers, connected by tcp/ip ports.

I can print ok if I set default to Oki, open Vantage, print everything on
Oki, but as soon as HP Laser is selected, print jobs to Oki disappear
without printing.

Anybody seen this problem, and have a solution?

I'm on 5.2, Progress 9.1D09, on a W2000 workstation. The latest print
drivers have been loaded and installed.

We have the same problem with AP checks. Payroll checks print fine. We
have discovered if the user exits Vantage, deletes all the files in the
c:\epicor\mfgwrk61 file they can then log back into Vantage and print.
Every time they print to the line printer (networked) and switch to a laser
printer (networked) they have this problem.

The payroll check printing doesn't have this problem, so were thinking it's
a problem with their AP checks program.

Paul, thanks for the response. We don't have payroll, so our problem is
with AP check printing. Epicor suggested it was an OS problem, not Vantage.
Do you have Crystal Reports installed on the workstation that prints AP
checks? Epicor suggested installing CR, then uninstalling it leaving behind
the shared dll files for Vantage to use.

We have a development computer that our Programmer uses. It has everything
installed on it, Crystal, the Progress API, etc. and has the same problems
that other Windows 2000 and XP systems have. We haven't tested with a
Windows 98 computer.

There is a document somewhere that outlines what crystal DLL files you need
to copy to a client PC that is having problems printing from Vantage, but I
thought it was for Vantage 5.2 Were on 6.1 and didn't have the problem in
5.2.

I went to the e-portal and started a new call about the same problem, so
I'll see what they have to say now. We approached this a few months ago,
but have just been living with it.

BTW, I'm seeing the same problems with printing AR Invoices. After we print
the edit list to the line printer (Genicom 6406) we have to clean the
Vantage work folder before printing the Invoices to a laser printer HP1200.

Another way to "install" the DLLs is to use the report distribution facility (download from Epicor FTP) and distribute any report to the client - even if you never use it. It will move a ton of Crystal DLLs to the client PC.

One other thing I have seen cause this sort of problem has been the use of graphics images, like logo, in the Crystal report doing the printing. Being that the checks are on a dot matric though I wouls suppose you aren't doing any graphics. But I have seen Crystal printing choke on image files where reformatting them to a smaller total byte size made them work. Similarly Crystal is "validated" with a very limited number of printer drivers. If all you are printing is text on checks you might try installing the printer on the client again but use a "Generic/Text Only" driver and have the users use that version of the printer for checks.

Norm,

We had that issue also. Only way we found to work around it was to reboot
the computer (personal computer - not the server!) before printing the
checks. I know that isn't what you wanted to hear, but since checks are
only printed weekly (as opposed to daily), it works for us.
