Classic to Vantage Data Conversion

Duane,

Sorry to take so long answering. Epicor (then DCD Company) did a prelim so
we could get some bugs out & then performed the final to V2.70.454. It
went very well, and was worth every penny.

We are converting from DCD Classic to Vantage 6.0. We would like to
convert much of our Classic data to Vantage.

Has anyone had experience with the "Classic to Vantage Data
Conversion" service that Epicor offers? I would be interested in the
sucesses and failures of doing this.

We are trying to evaluate the cost/benefit of hiring Epicor to
convert our data.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

We went from Classic to Vantage 4.0. We thought having them convert the data was worth it although there were a number of tables we did not convert and we also seriously cleaned out and purged data in Classic before hand. We did not convert any financials, A/R or A/P info. Pretty much just customers and parts (with BOMs) and some related files. We purchased conversion "with Vantage" as part of a package deal but basically this was just a lump sum of service credits to cover the estimated custom programming hours. Not that there is much custom programming as they have this all pretty well coded now.

If I recall we had them convert it twice - once for our testing process and once as we went live. So we flushed out a few odd issues in the first conversion that avoided problems when we went live. Part of the conversion process involved a lot fo Q & A with them and actually they probably converted it several times before the first one was given to us. Part of the process checks for data consistancy. Also, and this is hazy now, I think we had to define a bunch of supporting tables (work centers, operations, etc...) and equate old codes to new codes.

Finally, when we converted to 5.20 (form 4.0) several things got messed up in Sales Territories and Salesman codes on customer because we did not use one of the table and the conversion and filled in with blanks. We finally realized only customers from the conversion were the affected (would not show up in browsers like tracker or cust maint). But since it was a problem they caused they stepped up and wrote a small fix-it routine to populate the customer master fields and all was well.

Anyway, this is what I recall from 2-1/2 years ago. For us it was worthwile.

Hello Duane
One big failure. In our case we paid for the preliminary conversion and
then built the database from scratch. Our customer master files where
totally useless. It had something to do with combining two separate tables
into the one customer table. The data in the quote table takes precedence
over the data in the customer table. For example: info for our customers
who have changed names or address was replaced with info from old quotes.
We also had customers listed multiple times.

We converted from Classic to Vantage 5.2 a year ago and also did the
test conversion prior to going live. That was beneficial because we
identified some issues and also were able to practice using our own
data in the test data base. I thought the process went pretty well
overall and was worthwhile. Paul, our Vantage conversion contact, was
responsive and promptly fixed what needed fixing. Having a lot of
history converted was great! Prior period financial reports even
tied out and balanced the first try...I was pleasantly suprised.

You do need to pay attention though. Out implementation consultant
helped us look for weird stuff coming over from Classic and gave us
some pointers that helped make the live conversion relatively
painless.

By the way, I'm a new member and what I'm seeing is fantastic! You
folks are really into it. Don't think I'm nearly as technical as
many of you but what a great place to share knowledge. Just hope I
can contribute as well as learn.

PS Does this thing have a spell checker??
