Constrained Material

Amy,

(See Dale's post below)... Apparently it IS an AMM license issue. The consenus seems to be that without AMM, all jobs treat stocked materials as constrained. Dale feels it is when forward scheduling. Knowing intimately how lame the scheduler is (with AMM), I'm not convinced it really matters (as much of what is claimed behavior logic has proven not to be true).

You could probably test the theory by making up a fictitious purchased stocked part with (say) a 1000 day lead time, adding it to a job as a material detail (linked to the 1st OP), and then seeing if the scheduler delays the job 1000 days (scheduling the job forward and then backward).

Very curious as to what that might reveal...

In my case, the parts are stocked. (We don't have any non-stock
parts). I'm just baffled as to why I cannot mark ANY of them
constrained.

Hi,
I want to do some testing with constrained materials (V. 8.00.811B) but
the check box for constrained mateial is greyed out on all parts.
Anyone know the secret to being able to mark a material as constrained?

Forward Scheduling will automatically use material due dates in the
scheduling calculations even without Adv. Scheduling.

This was broken in some versions on 8.03.3XX but has been fixed in the
latest 8.03.4XX.

No, I'm not. Is that the answer? It didn't specify in the help
files that constrained material belongs to a different module.

Thanks for the heads up Dale. I had given up on it on 305 (as it produced pretty flaky, often inexplicable results). I'll give it another test on 404.

I guess I was also barking up the wrong tree (re: Amy's original post) as I incorrectly assumed it was an AMM license (which we have always had) dependent capability.

Re: Amy's problem: I seem to recall Constrained materials must be non-phantom, stocked, qty bearing parts (or the Part can not be set to constrained). I'm fuzzy on whether they also have to be set for MRP processing.

Thanks

Sorry Amy, I think I struck out on providing any help.

According to Dale (see his post) it is not an AMM dependent feature.

I just tried, and I'll be darned if I can set up a Part in any way that it results in it NOT being able to be set as Constrained. (I'm checking this on 8.03.404).

Perhaps on past versions, if a part is already set to make/purchase direct, the checkbox field becomes non-editable (since make/purchase direct parts ARE 'constrained' by definition).

Any chance your parts are make/purchase direct already?

If not, sorry I failed you.

Rob,

I think we are both right. Setting the constrained flag on specific
parts is AMM dependent.

Without AMM, forward scheduling all parts are constrained. This can be
overridden on the scheduling options menu (then none of the parts are
constrained).

Hope this helps.

The APS (Advance Production Scheduling) module enables this field
allowing you to mark stocked items as constrained in the part master.
