Continuing problems with Vantage (memory, etc.)

Bob,
We are 6 months in production, and still having fun! I can give you
tips on a couple of your questions.

1. We have been configured for 8GB of memory since the beginning, and
have not had memory issues that I am aware of. However, we run
Service Connect on a seperate box. Are you running it on the Vantage
Server? If so, I have found that the scadesrouter.exe service has a
memory leak. If we run several large ESC scripts, it will eventually
fail with a memory error. I watched the memory usage of that service,
and after a script completes, it does not release all of the memory.
If I restart the service between scripts there is no problem. Another
memory issue with ESC is that whether or not you are capturing it, it
always returns the entire record after an update. We wrote a script
to create manual journal entries, and after each entry, it would
return every record in the journal. This just compounds memory
utilization. I had to break it up into 1 file per journal to get them
done, restarting scadserouter between each file. I have been told
there is an "enhancement request". But of course, this is intended
behavior.

2. The unable to connect to app server, for us, was related to our
desktop firewall. It sees Vantage as a threat. When it is run for the
first time, it pops up a message with the default behavior of Block
All. Of course our users read the message very carefully, NOT, and
simply click OK. We have to manually set it to allow Vantage to
access the network. We use Symantec. But unable to connect to app
server is typically a network access issue. Make sure the desktops
can ping, etc...

I hope the information helps a little bit. I wish you the best of
luck with your Go Live. I can sympathize with everything you have
said, and know exactly how you feel.

Best Regards,
Craig

Having dealt with the aftermath of in-place upgrades to all sorts of
OSs, I strongly advise people to *never* perform in-place upgrades of an
OS, even on desktops.

As for Windows 2003 Server, I don't even think it would work to do an
in-place installation of x64 over x32.

our problems. We have not found anyone at Epicor that seems to know or
admit there is a memory problem with Vantage or Service Connect yet we
still experience continuous errors! What is "cannot connect to app
server" anyway? Yes we have tickets open with support............

We have requested our Service Connect upgrade to 8.3 but have not got
our disks yet.

SCALES

We are running Insite Manifest and have great consultants helping us,
yet we cannot get the scales to work with Vantage, neither can the
Insite Manifest consultant. Yes, it is connected to the serial port. The
scale works with FedEx World Ship Manager on this computer! Yes we have
a ticket open with support...............

I have a deadline to meet of April 1st can anyone help with these
issues?

How do you know if your server supports x64? I have the same problem - we are running Server 2003 Standard and are maxed out on memory. Was thinking I needed to upgrade to Server 2003 Enterprise but wasn't sure what that all entailed. If I can do this without upgrading - I would be very curious to know how.

Thanks -

You don't need to buy Enterprise to get past the 4GB limit. If your
system supports it, switch to Server 2003 x64, which is a $0 change.

We are looking at April 1st for our "Go Live" date with Vantage. We are
extremely disappointed with the performance, integration,
interoperability, consultants, support (in specific areas) and overall
ability to make the "Go Live" happen. We were supposed to go live Jan
1st 2008. Due to continuing problems we have delayed our production
move.

Here is a list of some of our road blocks at this time:

* Service Connect is not performing well with Vantage. We
continuously get errors on our uploads.

o Unable to connect to app server

o System out of memory

o Unknown errors

o Etc

* The scales will not weigh the packages and enter the weight
into Vantage

SERVICE CONNECT

We have added memory to our server, 12 GB

Now we find that Server 2003 Standard edition has to be upgraded to
Server 2003 Enterprise before it will see above 4 GB. The recommendation
from consultants was Server 2003 standard with 4 GB of memory they said
that would be fine. Got news for you, the server eats memory like I eat
candy! We have completed the memory upgrade and are going to upgrade to
Enterprise and regardless of what the analysis tells us on the server I
am not convinced the memory and upgrade and OS upgrade is going to solve
our problems. We have not found anyone at Epicor that seems to know or

I have found that fastest/easiest method to see if you can run x64
OS, is to use VMware's x64 bit compatibility test tool located at

http://www.vmware.com/download/ws/drivers_tools.html

This makes this question easier to answer, as well as eliminating the
need to ask you the finer details of your server hardware.

This tool can be used within a 32-bit OS to test.

Is it possible to run the 6.10.540 "Process Server" as a service in
Windows 2003, and to have it also automatically start the "Global
Alerts" process?

We have it run as an executable on login, but doing so means:

1) someone has to actually log in to the server whenever it boots
2) we can never, ever log off, even if we're using remote-desktop
sessions, as they start additional process-server processes and kill
them all when they close. Very frustrating.

Thanks.

Casey,

We just finished upgrading to Enterprise and now recognize 12 GB of
memory. If you have a 64 bit machine it will run x64, however the
difference is x64 requires a complete re-build, Enterprise is an upgrade
and went very smooth!

Good Morning Everyone,

I know this has been discussed several times but does anyone have a data
schema for vantage. I have gone round and round with epicor and they
just will not get me one and they won't give me a specific reason why.
It is very frustrating!
