Conversion from 3.0 to 4.0

Ken,

The only problem we had was that we got error messages when we tried to do
the data base conversion. It turned up that we had an indexing problem with
our 3.0 Data Base. Support told us to do a dump and load on the DB then it
converted quite nicely. You may want to contact support real quick and get
that procedure before they go home for the weekend. It may save you some
real frustration if you get that kind of error.

You can run the client install while the DB is converting. We did ours
after we brought the first workstation up. When you first start Vantage it
does the real conversion not just the Schema changes. That's the part that
takes the longest (90 meg db took about 45 minutes).

Be sure to convert any customized Crystal Reports per their instruction or
come Monday you'll have a plant full of people running around setting their
hair on fire because they are getting PROWIN32 errors when trying to print.
Been their & dun it.

Good luck and God speed

Wayne

Well, we're taking the plunge tonight... moving from Rio to Morocco
(the U-Haul is loaded). I currently have 4.0 running on its own server,
with
our live 3.0 database on another. I'd appreciate comments on any of the
following issues:

1. Any caveats to the information on pages 27-29 of the 4.0 installation
guide, "Upgrading database from existing application"?
2. Ben at Vantage tech support told me I could be uninstalling 3.0 and
installing 4.0 on my clients during the database conversion process. Anyone
have any problems doing that?
3. Has anyone had problems installing the 4.0 data collection gateway
software that I should know about (bugs [i.e. undocumented product
features]
and operational glitches aside)?
4. Any last-minute words of wisdom?

We no longer allow attachments to files. To access/share Report Files,
please go to the following link: http://www.egroups.com/files/vantage/
(Note: If this link does not work for you the first time you try it, go to
www.egroups.com, login and be sure to save your password, choose My Groups,
choose Vantage, then choose Files. If you save the password, the link
above will work the next time you try it.)
One word of advice that someone else has mentioned, which seems prudent... Copy your version 3.0 database files to another location before doing the copy/convert process. That way you can easily get 3.0 back up should something go haywire. You probably already thought of that, though.

Ken,

Yes definitely copy the 3.0 data to a temp directory and use that. You will
have to modify any custom Crystal reports you may use.
