Conversion from 8.03.409C to 9.04.506B taking forever!

In August we went from 8.03.405a to 9.04.506C. Our tests on windows 2003 on a 64 bit server using VMware showed it would take 72 hours to convert our then 14 GB database.
We went back to a 32 Bit Physical server (at the suggestion from a non-epicor consultant) and that time went from 72 hours to 16.

The version of E9 that we were going to was 9.04.504. I timed each step of the conversion process. The schema change alone took 2.5 hours. Now, on the latest versions of Vantage / Epicor, that schema change takes upwards of 20 hours. Our database is only 13GB. Both of these are done on the same hardware that we used last year. No virtualization is utilized. Epicor has suggested that we do a Dump and Load. I did that, but it didn't help. Our ideal conversion should happen over a weekend. The support rep and I have run out of ideas. Seems that I have nearly the same problem as in this post

Here is what we use for a server:
Intel Xeon CPU E5520 @2.27 Ghz (2 processors) 16 cores total.
32 GB RAM
64-Bit 2008 Server OS
We are on progress 10.1C
Forgot to mention that we have 16 drives on that server setup as Raid 10.

By chance are you running conversions and schema change on a machine other than where Epicor 9 is installed?

Nope. Running them on that server where E9 is installed. And we are trying to go to 9.04.507A, instead of 506B as I put in the subject.

Matt;

We just went "Live" this past Monday on 9.05.603 from Vantage 8.03.409C and had to go through the 9.04 stuff also.

All of my previous conversions for testing, took abou 16 Hours to go to 9.05 but after loading the 9.04.507A Service Pack and Patch, the 9.04 portion took longer and after loading the 9.05.603 Service Pack, that also took longer.

8.03.409C to 9.04.507A took 19.0 Hours on a 7GB Progress DB.
9.04.507A to 9.05.603 took 6.0 Hours on a 7GB Progress DB.

Note: One of the longest conversion issues is the ChangeLogs. We use them extensively, and they hang the conversions at every step, as others have stated here. If you can get company buy-in, backup your Vantage DB as a safety. Clear out the ChangeLogs, then do your conversion. Restore the "Safety" backup back to Vantage and then you can always refer to that if you need to find a changelog entry prior to 9.05. This way, you save a ton of time in your conversions, and don't take that baggage forward.

Vantage 8.03.409C was on a Physical machine, but the E9.04 and E9.05 were virtual with Dell Equallogic PS4000X 16 Drives in Raid 50.

NOTE!!! Be very sure to run your UOM Conversion a final time in 8.03 and update any changes there. I had a 2 hour delay because I used the UOM from my testing, and there were additional records added to 8.03 since I created it and it kacked out in 9.04. If I had run it again, and just added those records I could have saved myself 2 hours and a lot of headaches.

I also found that from 8.03.409C to 9.04.507A it did not convert my BPM's and I had to re-create them in 9.05.603.

We started Friday afternoon at 5:00, and I worked all night that sunday from 2:00PM Sunday afternoon until 10:AM that Monday when we turned it on for everyone. Plan for a long weekend.

We are still modifying reports etc. this week, but the system seems pretty stable and the world did not end as many thought. ;)

Good Luck!
George Hicks
